General Assembly to hold emergency session after US veto of Israel resolut

The United Nations General Assembly will hold a special emergency session tomorrow in a move by Arab and Non-Aligned Movement states to circumvent a United States veto of Tuesday’s Security Council resolution demanding that Israel not deport or threaten the safety of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The meeting, requested by Sudan on behalf of the Arab League, will convene under the “Uniting for Peace” formula of 1950, under which the Assembly may call for “collective measures” when the Council fails “to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in cases where there appears to be a threat to the peace,” Assembly spokesperson Michelle Montas told a news briefing.

Ms. Montas said no resolution had yet been submitted to the Assembly. “But I think the draft resolution will be pretty close to the resolution that was presented to the Security Council and that met with a veto,” she added. ---

1. Wow, this is pretty significant
I just thought they were going to have a standard vote.

The "Uniting for peace" loophole is the one that was actually used to endorse war in Korea (if I recall) so it holds a lot of force.

Hence, I'd be extremely surprised to see this mentioned in any major American newspaper. Funny that, they seemed to have in-depth running commentaries on UN voting on another subject, just recently...

7. Nuthin' but shit
The Israelis can always put it a protest vote at the UN. No wait, they can't. They aren't even a member--mostly because no one wants them to join because they refused to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and have illegally occupied Palestine for the last 26 years.

4. I would love to see the rest of the world
stand up to the thugs in Washington and Tel Aviv and say "Enough!" I just hope that there are enough "free" countries left to make the difference - so many have been "bought", one way or another.

6. I predict a huge F grade for the USA the world over
This is significant. Does not even matter what the issue is. the world standing up to the USA for the first time - ever.

We have no economic clout
No resource clout
No military clout
No diplomatic clout

We may as well be in the stone age right here in the great white USA.

9. What it should have done before war on Iraq.
The General Assembly should have convened when the US/UK war threat was mounting. Too bad it's been so passive.

10. About time they stood up!
If the UN is ever going to keep the peace they better get to it.

For sure, the * White House thinks they can control the UN. And run it right into the ground. Funny, ain't it not, that Israel -- our 'Best' friend in the ME -- ain't even in the UN. Didn't know that...shoulda'.

11. We may yet see the UN get balls
Its always a danger when you are the one with power and someone stands up to you that you lose your power. I think that is what has happened to the US. The world stood up for the first time in the
attack on Iraq and now they aren't afraid of us. We gave them the best we had and they found it didn't hurt so bad so now they may really become relevant.

12. It would be a very meaningful symbolic gesture, but non-binding

Not that it would matter if it were, Israel is currently in violation of 69 UN resolutions, or maybe only 68...
