17. This is very SAD
It is too late, and Europe and the rest of the world will remember the Democrtats' silence before the invasion. They dislike both parties, because neither one listened to what the world was saying.

4. Snips from story
BOSTON - The case for going to war against Iraq was a fraud "made up in Texas" to give Republicans a political boost, Sen. Edward Kennedy said Thursday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Kennedy also said the Bush administration has failed to account for nearly half of the $4 billion the war is costing each month. He said he believes much of the unaccounted-for money is being used to bribe foreign leaders to send in troops.

He called the Bush administration's current Iraq policy "adrift."

The Massachusetts Democrat expressed doubts about how serious a threat Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) posed to the United States in its battle against terrorism. He said administration officials relied on "distortion, misrepresentation, a selection of intelligence" to justify their case for war.

"There was no imminent threat. This was made up in Texas, announced in January to the Republican leadership that war was going to take place and was going to be good politically. This whole thing was a fraud," Kennedy said.

Ouch-ez-vous! And yeah, they go right back to Chappaquiddick... Pretty sickening. Doesn't disguise the fact that ol' Ted is correct. Was correct. Is still correct.

We all were. And considering the continuing death toll and the hemmorhaging of money on this stupid, useless, reckless war, it's a total bitch to be correct. It doesn't get rid of the anguish to be able to say "I told you so."

9. I'm glad dems are starting to stand up, but...
I'm not sure I can go as far as to say I am busting with pride. It's really not to difficult to wait until there's a pole out that says the wrong point of view is starting to be less popular, and THEN start opening your mouth about the right point of view.

The time to point out that the boat has a leak is not after it sinks when everyone agrees that indeed the boat does have a leak. The time to point out that the boat has a link is the moment you see it, EVEN if other people don't see it yet.

The thing that bothers me is that congressional democrats could have, I believed done a lot more for the country and the party if they had stood up sooner against things they knew to be wrong. But in the end, they wouldn't do it, becasue it might cost them political captial.

I understnad that this is the way the game is played. And I understand that if Dems wrecklessly attacked a president with a 95% approval rating that could be seen as foolish politics -- maybe. But its certainly disappointing that this is true, and its bad for the country. Oh how desparately I long for representatives that really represent me! People who will stand up for what they know to be right even if they are the only one to do it -- kind of like Barbara Lee for example. I'm so appreciative of people who will call a spade a spade even if it costs them reelection. In this case it wouldn't have cost dems anything. And in fact, we would have come out looking even better as the American public slowly begins to see that we were right all along.

Anyway... I'm just rambling now.. I'm happy democrats are starting to speak out. It was long overdue, and congressional democrats should be ashamed of that fact. But I guess I can get over the fact that their a little late to the party and just embrace the fact that they showed up at all.

53. Wow ... grow up.
I don't need to give you a "fucking break" when I post reasonably thought out "opinion" on a disucssion forum. Or would you perfer if only the people you personally agree with were allowed to post?

Is this a place for people to discuss how the democratic party can be most successful or is it a place for a select few to hold the "popular" opinions and everyone else to be a "yes man?"

I think I'll take that "break" now...

I wish the same....that we had representatives that would represent and not be afraid of the votes they may offend.

I am proud of the Democratic base, which is all of us, for taking action. I have worked my butt off calling, writing letters, emails, protests and going to congressional offices to be heard. I know many of you have done the same. And...I truly believe we made a difference.

the whole miserable series of lies was something concocted by the Bush gang to do something they had planned to do even before the fraud was installed in the WH. They are all a bunch of thugs, and I can't wait til a Dem president is not only elected, but takes office.

The 2004 elections are a chance to restore some measure of sanity to our country, and to start trying to unravel the massive amounts of damage neocons have done. I'm so glad Sen Kennedy is speaking out.

36. Not good for Bushy.
I especially like this part:

Kennedy said a recent report by the Congressional Budget Office showed that only about $2.5 billion of the $4 billion being spent monthly on the war can be accounted for by the Bush administration.

"My belief is this money is being shuffled all around to these political leaders in all parts of the world, bribing them to send in troops," he said.

Even more reason for people to be pissed off about the $87 billion - our money's being spent to bribe other countries to send troops so it doesn't look like we're acting unilaterally?

This isn't getting news coverage it deserves, and that's got me annoyed to the point of being in pain.

61. A "good man" does not lie in order to achieve his goals.
Let me remind all the recently "enlightened" former Bush loyalists: No one died when Clinton was caught lying... And he was impeached.

Now, what are you going to do about Gee-Dub? Stay home next election?

Coward.

The other stuff can sound like partisan rancor. But every American will want to know where the hell that money is disappearing to.

If this were a Latin American country, we would be sniffing around for Swiss bank accounts!

81. It's never been confirmed or denied
Kennedy and Wellstone were suppose to campaign togther in the Twin Cities area the moring of the crash. They were scheduled to attend a rally in Duluth that evening. As you know, Wellstone changed his plans to attend a funeral. Kennedy stayed in the metro and followed the original schedule. They planned to meet in Duluth for the rally.

It does stand to reason that, if they had stuck to the original plan, they would have flown north together.

The anti-war fire was there in 1969, but so were other problems for Ted. He was still able to pivot the anti-war movement with his Senate speech after the "Hamburger Hill" waste in the A Shau Valley. Can he do it again?

79. UPDATE GOP REMARKS - Kennedy's 'Texas' remark stirs GOP reaction
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/09/18/kennedy.iraq/

"The senator's comments reflect the tired old soft-on-defense attitude of the Democratic Party," the Republican official told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"And the American people are thankful for a strong and decisive leader in President Bush who isn't afraid to make tough decisions."

The Honorable Edward M. Kennedy
United States Senate
317 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2101

Dear Senator Kennedy,

I can only say thank you for finally saying what we've all been thinking for the last year: Bush's war is a fraud. It is Wag the Dog on the largest possible scale.

I trust you will join with the 66% of Americans who oppose Bush's request for another $87 billion -- this is just throwing good money after bad. The counterinsurgency war in Iraq is unwinnable, and the whole mess needs to be handed over the UN immediately.

Thank you again for having the courage to say the emperor has no clothes,

<signed>

I'm not sure which is worse...

that our elected representatives are slow on the uptake..or that people vote for those who are slow on the uptake...(myself included)

I'm sorry...but it was a fraud before, it was a fraud during and it's still a fraud....how can anyone say they didn't know?

Don't insult my intelligence by pretending this is some shattering newsflash news... it's bad enough that republicans attempt to insult our intelligence.

Yeah, yeah...it's election "strategy"...I know the drill..however, that "election strategy" has gotten innocent people killed...as well as US soldiers.

I'm just so disgusted with "all" this...Sometimes I feel like those afraid to speak out before the invasion of Iraq are just jumping on some bandwagon to get elected or re-elected...and it disgust me.

Yeah, Bush lied...but he was lying long before they deployed troops to Iraq....

I'm not saying Kennedy, per se, was afraid to speak out...I'm just saying..well..I'm just disgusted. I'm tired of the death. I'm tired of the destruction and I'm sick of other people's pain being used as a platform.

It's bad night for this military wife.

105. I love Kennedy....but
though he didn't give Bush the vote on Iraq...and he spoke out at the time (somewhat)...he is one of all the Dem congresspeople who started trembling in fear over patriotism. The cabal thought that patriotism was going to carry them and those Dems weren't sure they were wrong. The majority of Dems cowered in the corner and spoke little bitty sentences about making sure we were justified in going in. WELL, I WANT TO KNOW - if we knew it was a pretense for corporations - a crock...then why couldn't congresspeople? God bless Wellstone, Kennedy, Byrd and all the others who did not give their vote-blessing to the cabal's agenda. Dems have been weak in their position...especially Clinton, Shirmer, Kerry, Gebhardt, Edwards and more. I resent that they are only going to get on the bandwagon NOW.

I want an accounting of the meeting that the White House had with Senate and Congress Dems and what was said to them that convinced them that they could vote to kill. I want to know what proof they were given? I want to know who spoke out in those meetings. I want to know why they were afraid of votes when they HAD to know that it was a crock. Everyone around the world could see through the plan - except those leaders who were paid off.

So did the Kennedy=Byrd people ever meet with the Clinton-Shirmer-Gebhardt-Dashle groups to bless each other?

Wellstone First vote in the Senate = against Iraq War 1
Wellstone Last vote in the Senate = against Iraq War 2

99. Betcha it's the energy papers that cheney won't turn over.

I've had the feeling that bush's handlers have been growing quite disenchanted with him lately.

I'd bet that someone in the white house was following orders and smuggled the papers out to Kennedy with the purpose of discrediting bush and his administration.

Looks like Kennedy has his own 'deep throat'.

This has to mean that bush has been targeted for destruction.

104. I've always figured the Iraq invasion was mentioned in the energy papers
in that "we're gonna go get Iraq's oil".

And that's why he's keeping them so tightly locked.

This whole thing has an unusual coincidence in timing with the papers inevitably being revealed
