Texas Dems Turn on Senator After Boycott

By NATALIE GOTT
Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- When 10 Democratic lawmakers returned to the Capitol after running off to New Mexico for six weeks to block congressional redistricting, they were met with boisterous cheers from the Senate gallery.

But the crowd had a different welcome for Democratic Sen. John Whitmire of Houston: Members of the audience unveiled white T-shirts printed with one letter apiece, spelling out "QUITMIRE."

After 30 days holed up in a hotel in Albuquerque, N.M., Whitmire broke ranks with his fellow Democrats Sept. 2 and decided to return to Texas. His decision gave Senate Republicans the quorum needed to get back to work on a redistricting plan that could give the GOP more seats in Congress.

His angry fellow Democrats regard him as a turncoat. But the 20-year Senate veteran said he has no regrets.

"I'm just so at peace with what I did," said Whitmire, 54, the state's senior senator. "I made a very hard but correct decision to come back."

the day he came back to work. He looked whipped to me. I just could not feel sorry for him. Serves him right.

4. I agree.
As soon as we heard about it, my husband (who usually votes GOP) said Perry probably called him up and said "Hey brother, we got something for ya" to get him to sneak away at night and come back.

Over the past few years we've both found ourselves uncomfortably enlightened about the "plans" the GOP appears to have for our country. The tide's turning in this house.

11. Hi Mom
Hi,

I just wanted to say it is really heartening to see lifelong GOP voters like you opening their eyes to the current GOP manipulations. I think Republicans have people fooled on the whole tax cut thing. Problem is, its not really a tax cut, its deficit/debt spending until a Dem like Clinton comes along and gets the financial house in order, then, after when there's another surplus, time to rape the treasury again. The $560 Billion debt for this year, if you divide it by the 280 million people in this country is a $2,000 bill for every man, woman, and child in America. How badly are you mismanaging the government if you have to get a $2,000 check from 280 million different people to cover your excesses?

Anywa, I consider myself to be fiscally conservative, socially moderate, I guess in these times that makes me a flaming lefty, commie pinko liberal. Go figure.

12. Tar and feather the sonofabitch!
We should rediscover that great patriotic American tradition that dates back to pre-Revolutionary America, tar and feathering public officials that misbehave.
