Governor Wants Quick Election as Appeals Court Agrees to Review Delay
By David Kravets Associated Press Writer
Published: Sep 20, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis, buoyed by a week of appearances with heavyweight Democrats, cast his support for a quick recall election after a federal appeals court agreed to rethink postponing the ballot.

Davis' call Friday to bring on the Oct. 7 election defies conventional wisdom that he would benefit from a drawn-out process that would give him a chance to demonstrate his leadership skills.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals announced Friday it would reconsider a three-judge panel's ruling to postpone the vote, extending the uncertainty that has overshadowed the campaign.

"My attitude is, let's just get it over with, let's just have this election on Oct. 7, put this recall behind us so we can get on with governing the state of California," Davis said. (snip/...)

He is an idiot, and he should be recalled. He just proved it.

yes on recall, yes on Bustamante. I have no more questions about it.

Didn't Gore just get in there to help him out? What side is Gore on? Doesn't appeal the Election 2000 thing. And now this? And, let's not forget, Gore chose Lieberman as a running mate.

I am stunned.

7. Another Democrat basher on DU?

Who would have guessed?

Davis has no power over the court, he's putting the best attitude out there that he can. If they go ahead 50% of DUers will say it's not fair because of the punchcards. If they delay the election and use electronic voting, the other half of DUers will be furious.

Davis is trying to win. He has always been a fighter and he almost always win.

He's also working with Clinton and other smart fighting Democrats. Give the guy some credit.

Davis and Gore are none of the things you describe. Look, I'm not a BIG fan of either one of these two but, no, Davis should NOT be recalled. The Republicans had a chance to recall him in November 2002 and they didn't have enough votes. That's the way the system works. Because they didn't like the result of the election, they found an obscure clause (loophole) in the Voting laws and the Constitution to take advantage of low voter turnout in 2002 to try and, once again, usurp a legal and fair election.

Personally, I'm torn on whether it would be better to have the election in October or March as there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

"Yes on Recall?" Karl Rove would like to thank you for your participation.

NO on Recall
YES on Bustamonte
NO on 53
NO on 54

17. I think the poll numbers are better now
I think a drawn out campaign hurts Davis now.

3. DUDE....
He's trying to ride the glow of Clinton and Gore into a squeaker win. He knows it might fade again with time...he probably feels the time is right to get it done right now. He's "calling" everyone's hand.
It's a ballsy move, but it could be the right time.

4. Dudette here!
:D

Heres what bothers me from the article:
"Some legal experts said Friday's decision suggests the court has serious misgivings about the postponement and may be inclined to let the election go ahead next month. The 11-judge panel, chosen by lottery, includes eight judges appointed by Democrats, seven of them by President Clinton. The court's ruling could be further appealed to the Supreme Court."

So maybe Davis is just putting a good face on a bad hand.

I have this really sick feeling that Clinton and Gore are working overtime to make sure that we don't get to push the Gore v. Bush supreme court decision. A really sick feeling. Can I say that again: a really sick feeling.

This is a humongous opportunity for us to open up the Election 2000 judicial debacle. And Clinton and Gore are in the background perhaps using Davis to table this?

I am going to bed now. "If I should die before I wake, I thank the good lord for his mercy for sparing me one more moment of this living surreal hell on earth." I mean that.

6. Now why would Clinton and Gore do that??
That doesn't make any sense. I have to just disagree with your line of reasoning on this.

9. I agree, President Gore
would have NO reason to do this. Maybe, they figured things are swinging against the repigs and now would be a good time to get this over with. Further delay would cause further harm to California. I do agree with the delay, but this is maybe what they are thinking.

13. Your assertion makes no sense
Gore, Clinton, Davis and ALL Democrats would benefit if this case DID go to the Supremes. Remember, the argument for postponing the election is the SAME REPUBLICAN ARGUMENTS that were used in Bush v. Gore in 2000. For the Supremes to have to rule against themselves, less than 3 years later, will only further affirm that five of them are nothing more than partisian hacks.

10. This is smart politics
Davis would look weak if he were in favor of a postponement now. This is good politics to say bring on the election. The court is going to do whatever it will do no matter what Gov. Davis says so he may as well appear to be playing from strength. The momentum is going his way and he should do nothing to stop that.

14. This is actually pretty smart
The angry white male crowd out here is getting a full dose of "treacherous liberal disenfranchisement" harangues from every talking head jagoff from Limpballs to Bob and Ken.

By saying that he is for the election happening as scheduled, he at least gives his supporters the ability to say that he wants to see the will of the people done instead of it looking like he tacitly approves of the "frustration of the people's will by an ultraliberal partisan court".

15. This is brilliant move by Davis!
He is stronger now than he will be 6 months from now after the right-wing machine has the time and money to destroy him. At this time , they are divided and scattered, with too many candidates in the field and the possibility of dividing their Party over the national landscape. However, give them 6 months and they will probably correct this little "problem". This is a brilliant move by Davis. If the election goes forth in October, he stands the best chance of defeating the recall. And this confuses the hell out of the Repubs that are accusing the Dems of wanting to drw out the process. Good job Davis!

16. Let us not forget the voters ......
This is what the ACLU is focused upon. I also imagine Davis has been very stressed out over the ordeal. He was elected to do a job and really wants to get back to the table.

I can't blame him with saying "lets just do it and get it over with."
