Protests Grow Over Year-Long Army Tours
Protests Grow Over Year-Long Army Tours
National Guard Recruitment Short of Goal; Impact on Retention Is Predicted
By Vernon Loeb
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 20, 2003; Page A13

Angry protests mounted this week among families of Army National Guard and Reserve troops as the full impact of a new policy requiring those forces to serve year-long tours in Iraq began to hit home across the country.

In Kansas, family members of soldiers in the 129th Transportation Company, an Army Reserve unit, set up a Web site and almost immediately gathered 8,000 signatures on the Internet demanding that the Army scrap 12-month tours.

In Michigan, the wife of a soldier in the 1438th Engineer Detachment, an Army National Guard unit, said three-quarters of her husband's fellow soldiers are planning to quit as soon as they return from tours in Iraq that could be extended by four months under the new policy.

And in Florida, Sen. Bill Nelson (D) said after meeting with angry National Guard families in Orlando and Tampa that he would put a hold on the nomination of James G. Roche to become Army secretary if the policy is not modified. (snip/...)

National Guard Recruitment Short of Goal because of White House order; Impact on Retention Is Predicted

Where is the mention of Bush and the White house? If it was Clinton, that's all we'd be hearing about.

9. Do we have any figures on this? Is the DOD holding them back?
I do wish they would stop trying to tie this into the WW2 war as this is nothing like that. The flag thing is starting to wear thin with even the GOP. When the congressman may not get his votes this starts to hit home.Since most people in the US do not drag in the money from the corp running their country, for them it is starting to get old.The corp army is stating to fight back maybe? My trust is still down by a third and I am Mad and I am sure every one else that has a trust in that bank is plus the trust bank makes less so it is a rolling thing that starts to wear thin.

10. Rumsfield is porking the soldiers
While Ashcroft is porking the Americans at home.

A young man and women will indeed think twice about joining the armed forces.

12. March on Washington?
Isn't it long overdue? When Bush had the power of lies, when people thought there genuinely might be a chemical and a nuke program in Iraq, there were millions protesting. Now that we know he is a fraud, the protests have stopped. Why?

It's time to wake up the chimp and his sycophants in the Washington press corps.

Let's wait until they come out and show lower recruitment. Then

17. The Iraq war was
"won" with Clinton's army. If there has to be a next one it will be fought with Bush's. Let's hope there is not the need for another war. If there ever is a real need then it'll have to be the draft. Bush and the Pentagon have undermined this volunteer force.
