Dean has set an ambitious $5 million goal for collecting money through the Internet during the last 10 days of the fund-raising quarter.
Campaign manager Joe Trippi said Saturday that progress toward the goal will be tracked on Dean's Web site Sunday through Sept. 30, when each of the Democratic presidential candidates must report their July-September collections.

The totals will be an important measuring stick of the campaigns' viability. Dean raised more money than eight other Democrats in the last quarter, a surprise showing that helped make him the field's nominal front-runner.

He is expected to raise as much as $15 million this quarter -- $5 million more than last quarter and far more than any of his nine rivals are expected to collect.

Remember they kind of hinted if everyone counted in the "Americans for Dean" figure gave $100, we'd raise $40 million. And Bush is expected to report $35 million. LET'S DO THIS.

6. We're not going to raise $40 million

Because most of his contributors don't have enough money to contribute that much. A lot of his supporters are around my age (19) and can't give that kind of money. And there are probably tons of people on the e-mail list who don't give at all...remember that not everyone we sign up is a committed supporter...many sign up because they want more information. And I do not think that Trippi was saying that the campaign's goal was 40 million...just that theoretically that is how much would be raised if everyone on the e-mail list gave $100.

12. Stretch goals are good, but $40 million is impossible

$15 million would be INCREDIBLE for a Democratic candidate in a primary with 9 others. You'll negate the value of that very large total if you set a goal as unrealistic as $40 million.

As the Dean for America page says, it would take each of the 400,000 people who are signed up to receive campaign emails donating an average of $100 each to reach that goal. Of course, not all of the 400,000 emails are legitimate supporters (e.g., I'm a Dean supporter, but I signed up for emails from all the other campaigns, just because I'm interested in what they are saying), and there may be work and personal addresses, etc. And, not all of the legitimate supporters are going to be able to donate that large an amount (although many others will donate more).

Dean raised 7.5 last quarter not 10. It was amazing. If he raises 15M this quarter it will double his numbers.
