Saddam Hussein's defense minister surrenders to U.S. troops
Saddam Hussein's defense minister surrenders to U.S. troops
Saturday, September 20, 2003

By SCHEHEREZADE FARAMARZI
Associated Press Writer

MOSUL, Iraq -- Saddam Hussein's defense minister surrendered to U.S. forces Friday after lengthy negotiations the Americans hope will convince other former soldiers to abandon support for the ousted regime. U.S. soldiers beat back Saddam loyalists after some of the fiercest and best-coordinated attacks by the insurgents in months.

<snip>The former defense minister, Gen. Sultan Hashim Ahmad, gave up to Maj. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the 101st Airborne Brigade and the senior U.S. officer in the north, at the U.S. headquarters in Mosul, 240 miles north of Baghdad.

Dawood Bagistani, the Kurdish mediator who arranged the surrender, said Ahmad was received with "with great respect" as part of a deal in which the Americans agreed to remove the ex-defense minister from their list of the 55 most-wanted regime figures. That means Ahmad would be released after he finishes questioning and would not face prolonged captivity or trial, Bagistani said.

Ahmad, the eight of hearts in the deck of playing cards of Iraqi fugitives, was no. 27 on the most-wanted list. Thirty-eight of that group are now in custody and 14 remain at large. Three are either dead or thought to be dead.

2. Saddam's Defense Minister isn't the only one in Negotiations
Saddam in Talks with US?

Saddam in Talks with US? Saddam Hussein reported in secret negotiation with US forces for safe passage to former Soviet Belarus republic in exchange for information of WMD and his bank accounts. Report carried in London Sunday Mirror adds Bush adviser Rice is coordinating talks led by US Gen. Rick Sanchez. No comment from US sources.

Sir Nottingham! :hi:

I also have read two other reports from two Australian papers re: Saddam in talks, but both papers use The Mirror as thier source.

Saddam negotiating with US: press
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/09/21/1064082854927.html

and

Saddam in secret negotiations with US: newspaper

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/09/21/1064082854516.html

While I don't find The Mirror to be more than a rag, how credible are these two Australian papers? Both AU stories are basically the same, and quote The Mirror and no other sources.

8. Even if * has to
say, "Watch, Rocky, while I pull a rabbit outta my hat!", and produces a Saddam look-alike, *& Co are desperate to bring credibility to this debacle the BFEE and PNAC planned for, started and want to win at all costs to get control over the oil and the pipeline borders. If Saddam shows up, not dead, given support by US to enter Russia, then what? We invaded because Saddam was evil, but we'll keep him for show and tell?

Not discounting nor discrediting you, Nottingham. This all just gives rise to more questions, more speculation and, for me, more distrust of the whores in charge.

Saddam would deal too! Its just a sick situation all the way around!

12. Saddam gave them the minister ... who has knowledge and will
give them knowledge of WMD and all the goodies they are in need of to WIN at all costs! In addition, he gets his little trip to Russia with face lift and all that.

Sounds about right! The excuse to attack Syria or whomever they are wanting setup next?

:hi:
