Iraqi oil export hopes run into security nightmare

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq wants to boost its oil output and exports to finance reconstruction costs but is hampered by the serious lack of security, post-war officials said here as they prepared for their first OPEC meeting.

"We are definitely eager to see the industry and production progressing, and are planning for exports," said Shamkhi Huait Faraj, a member of the team from the interim administration attending this week's OPEC talks in Vienna.

Since taking up their posts, the US-installed Iraqi leadership has tried to boost production and ensure a regular flow of crude from the country which has the world's second largest reserves.

But the results have been disappointing for the markets.

3. I've read both sides here at DU...
We know that Halliburton has its greedy claws ready to rake in the $$dollars$$ when the pipeline starts running. Actually, it is already in production, but not very much oil is pouring.

Besides, it gets blasted as soon as it's fixed. ....$10 million later, it starts up again...more dynamite. It seems that the insurgents have figured out that the US wants oil, and they're going to kabosh the plan.

1) some people say that Halliburton is behind the sabotage. They actually want the pipeline to be damaged, so they can get more appropriations money to fix it.

2) others say they want to keep the oil running so they can $funnel$ more money to the WH and the board of Directors. Who says money doesn't buy everything?

I'm voting for #2.
