Iowans' support for Bush tumbles

By JONATHAN ROOS
Register Staff Writer
09/21/2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
President Bush's popularity in Iowa has plunged as more Iowans have become disenchanted with his handling of Iraq and the economy.

A new Des Moines Register poll shows that 49 percent of Iowans approve of Bush's overall job performance, a drop of 18 percentage points from May. That's his lowest approval rating in the Iowa Poll since taking office in 2001. The president's highest mark was 84 percent following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Changing fortunes in Iraq have hurt the Republican's popularity.

1. that's what happens when you have 10 candidates trying to outdo themselves
in calling Bush on his lies and reckless regime... even if Dean doesn't get the final nod, history will remember him as putting the Democratic debate where it should be this primary season.

3. Very true, the others (for the most part) would have never taken
off the gloves with Dumbo if Dean hadn't.

They'd still be kissing his fat, white Texas ass, and blowing any possibility of re-defeating this Spawn of Satan in 2004!

13. I'm a Deanie, but
I think it's safe to say that Kucinich was making the right noises from the start. The more "establishment" candidates would never have spoken up so boldly in the beginning, imho.

14. Credit To Both
Dean and Kucinich. Don't forget Graham, and Sen. Byrd.

16. I was proud to shake Kucinich's hand
he showed up at the local Maine Organic Farmers fair, otherwise known as the Common Ground Fair, held in a rural Maine town called Unity--thousands come from all over to this fair--anyhow, here was
Dennis moving right along and I shook his hand--a firm handshake and felt like a strong hand--no wimpy soft skin either--love that guy. Got his pic also.

19. Totally. But Byrd, MUCH as I appreciated what he did and said,
was talking into a vacuum. WE knew what he said, and so did a few others. But he was virtually ignored by almost everybody else. A REAL injustice, if you ask me! Same thing for Graham, who, UNFORTUNATELY, doesn't have a strong telegenic card to play. SADLY enough, neither does Kucinich. I applaud BOTH those men. I agree with both those men. They both make sense, and they're utterly correct. And unfortunately, Kucinich was talking into a vacuum for awhile, as nobody paid him much attention. Which I also thought was a tremendous injustice and unfair and WRONG!!!

That said, I do think it was Howard Dean who ratcheted up the language and the energy. I'm not sure why he wound up standing out more on similar messages. I'm just glad SOMEBODY did. Dean started the ball rolling. It therefore gave more "oomph" to Kucinich, and then to Graham.

I'm a Dean supporter, myself. But I'm glad to see ANYBODY firing up the opposition to bushco. It's good for all of us!

21. Maybe one of the also-rans
(and I have no idea which ones!) will end up as VP, and some of the others might end up with conspicuous offices in the Cabinet and elsewhere. I think anyone who is elected will be grateful enough to reward fellow Democrats who helped end the fascist regime we see right now.

2. IA is falling into line for next year
IA is a Democratic state in presidential elections. Since 1988 it has supported the Democrats. Even in the 1970s and in the 1980s, as Repuiblicans were winning the state, the Democrats were performing there above their national average. What this shows it the patterns in the red/blue map from 2000 are starting to reassert themselves.

5. yeah, I didn't think IA was one we had to worry about!
I grew up in NE and always imagined how much nicer it'd be on the other side of the Muddy Mo.

There are several liberal midwestern states. I hope MO can lean liberal this election as well. That'd be a huge help.

7. You have to go aways on the other side of the Muddy Mo'
Western Iowa is pretty conservative. Eastern Iowa is the Democratic part of the state. I grew up in southeastern Iowa which is not exactly super Democrat... too close to Missouri. Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Quad Cities, Clinton, Iowa City obviously, Muscatine, that area real Democrat... the

11. ...but have a pretty anti-Catholic past... Kennedy got ass kicked (map)

I could tell you the Catholic ethnicity that is responsible for each handful of counties Kennedy won...

The darkest one on the Mississippi in the east is Dubuque County, founded by French Catholics that is where all the German Catholics came to in the 1800's.

The one two up from the southern border is Wapello County, the town of Ottumwa... very Irish and some Italian. The two along the MN border... French, German the ones in the west... Poles.

10. Indeed Iowa did go to Gore in 2000
But was considered a swing state and it was close.

I'm in Iowa, Pottawattamie county, near Omaha Ne. Pretty conservative country here. Or as another DUer from Omaha recently stated it, E-I-E-I-O land.

Spread far and wide the messages of:
1. The fundamental illegitimacy of this presidency
2. The dangerousness of our foreign policy
3. The wreckage that happens every time we follow Republican economic policies.

22. Where is the GOP challanger going to get the money?
Bush has already raised over a hundred million dollars to get himself re-nominated. He has no opponent, and more money than all the Democratic candidates combined.
