Saddam still in Iraq: Chalabi KUWAIT CITY: The current President of the Iraqi Governing Council (IGC), Dr Ahmed Al-Chalabi says the removed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein is still in Iraq. He affirmed Iraq honors international resolutions on the demarcation of the Kuwaiti-Iraqi borders, and its respect for Kuwait as an independent state and member of the United Nations and the Arab League.
Dr Chalabi, who Saturday arrived here aboard a US military plane on a two-day visit on top of a high-ranking Iraqi delegation, praised assistance granted by Kuwait to the Iraqi people. He wished the relations between the two countries to improve on various levels, especially in the political and security domains. "The new Iraq is looking forward to brotherly and neighborly relations with Kuwait," Chalabi told reporters. He valued Kuwait's assistance for Iraqis "as both peoples have suffered from Saddam Hussein and his gang during their occupation of Kuwait."
In response to a question on the security situation in Iraq, Chalabi revealed the IGC recently signed an understanding memorandum with Coalition authorities to cooperate in various areas including the security issue. "It is now clear security and stability in Iraq can be achieved only if Iraqis were given the responsibility of maintaining Iraqi security," he added. "Now we (IGC) are cooperating with allied forces to reach to this goal (security) especially after appointing ministers including an interior minister in charge of security affairs," said Chalabi.
