Reagan had 'evil sex' angst
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3128464.stm

Personal letters written by Ronald Reagan reveal that the former US president had guilty feelings about sex, but his attitude later changed.

Mr Reagan advised one old friend in 1951 that sex was a natural function. "Even in marriage I had a little guilty feeling about sex, as if the whole thing was tinged with evil", he told the friend, whose husband had died.

But Mr Reagan said a "fine old gentleman" had pointed him in the right direction by citing the behaviour of primitive Polynesians. "These peoples, who are truly children of nature and thus of God, accept physical desire as a natural, normal appetite", he said.

The 1,000 letters appear in a book Reagan: A Life in Letters, which is being released on Tuesday. Excerpts are also being published in Time magazine.

2. It's not that they live as puritans,
it's that they hate themselves for not living as puritans.

I heard years ago that hookers do much better business at Republican conventions than Democratic.

5. As my family came to this country as puritans I think that is very funny
It is I think that Reagon felt sex was evil and he seemed to end up also disliking his children that really got to me.This left little room for him liking any children. What do those people like?

12. Sounds like Reagan was trying to get in his friend's pants.
And he's doing it the way RW'ers do it...it may seem bad, but it's god's gift to us...it's natural.

15. All I remember is
When Ronnie became Governor, they closed down all the topless bars in Bellflower, California unless they became non-alcoholic juice bars. So you could drink a little "grape" from a topless waitress and watch a video on the wall.

17. And Nancy was pregnant when she and Ronnie
got married?

By the way, I'm told that the following question is in foreign editions of Trivial Pursuit, but not in the U.S. version:

"How many months after the marriage of Ronald and Nancy Reagan was their daughter Patty born?"

The correct answer is five months.

She chased him. Cf., Kitty KELLEY's book on Anne Francis ROBBINS, uh, "Nancy". I'm waiting for KELLEY's book on the BUSHes, supposedly out this Fall.

20. Oh yeah? The twenties were dripping with sex!
Kids with their own cars, bootleg booze, the Charleston, a roaring economy. Read a book on the twenties sometime. You'll see. It was as decadent as any decade of the Twentieth century.

21. Just imagine what angst John Ashcroft must feel...
He's bound to be more sexually inhibited than Reagan could ever think of being. Sicko bastards. These repressed Republicans are determined to ruin it for all the rest of us.

24. Reagan and Thatcher: 'linked by the Lord'
Barf alert!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/09/23/wreag23.xml&sSheet=/portal/2003/09/23/ixportal.html&secureRefresh=true&_requestid=206726

The extraordinary friendship between President Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher - seen by outsiders as an historic alliance of political soulmates - was viewed by Mr Reagan as evidence of divine intervention, according to letters he wrote to her.

"Throughout my life, I've always believed that life's path is determined by a Force more powerful than fate. I feel the Lord has brought us together for a profound purpose, and that I have been richly blessed for having known you," he wrote in 1994, days after she delivered a speech at a formal 83rd birthday tribute for the retired president in Washington.

It has long been known that Mr Reagan cherished the "Iron Lady" as a counsellor and sounding board. But a previously unknown letter shows that Mr Reagan - who saw international relations in intensely personal terms of trust, much like his disciple George W Bush today - was certain that God had called them together, to wage a sacred struggle against Soviet communism, and other "evils".
