Braun to Announce White House Candidacy
WASHINGTON -- Democrat Carol Moseley Braun was formally declaring herself a presidential candidate Monday, forging ahead with a long-shot bid in an otherwise all-male contest for the White House.

"I am uniquely qualified to do the job of president, and I offer the clearest alternative to this current administration, whose only new idea has been pre-emptive war and a huge new bureaucracy," Braun said in a prepared speech declaring her candidacy official.

"A woman can fix the mess they have created, because we are practical, we are not afraid of partnerships and we are committed to making the world better for our children."

Monday's kickoff schedule started with speeches at two historically black colleges -- Howard University in Washington and Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. Braun's final appearance was scheduled in her home town of Chicago, where she got her start in politics 25 years ago with election to the Illinois Legislature.

1. Being a woman is not a qualification for fixing Bush's mess
It would be better if she had a record of taking a disaster and turning it around into a boon, like Howard Dean did in Vermont, but Braun lost her last election to Rove's tactics. What makes her think that she can beat him again?

My money and support is still on the investment banker-turn-doctor-turn-politician, Howard Dean. He didn't rely on his maleness to succeed. With effort, ingenuity, listening to voters, political courage, and calculated risk-taking, Gov. Dean took a $157,000 campaign setup fund and turned it into a $10 million campaign chest and is well on the way to duplicate and exceed his 2nd QTR fundraising success. Compared to Kerry, who took a $2 million transfer from his senate re-election campaign chest, Dean is a much shrewder investor and the kind of winner we will need to unseat Bush, who only exceeds at inheriting fortune and squandering it away.

she might not be qualified to receive funds and direction from those significant supporters of Israel. She has no business in the White House. Right?

3. Go Senator Moseley Braun!
I don't think that she thinks she can win. But her presence at the debates is so strong. I think she gives legitimacy for future women candidates. I hope that she stays in the race awhile. She adds something special (can't quite put my finger on it) to the campaign.

4. Thanks for sharing...
I'm glad you expressed this. Having a better understanding of WHY she's in the race helps me to not be negative about her. Like the earlier commenter, I can't see how the fact that she's a woman is going to make her a better candidate. In fact, that has a very negative connotation. Heck *I* would be a better president than Bush if I had as many friends and as much money as he does... if Bush is the standard to beat, the job obviously does NOT require intellect.

6. Good for her! Diversify perspectives AND constituents..
Hope she will help push children and community to the forefront of debate, in contrast to the death-worshipping anti-LIFE Republicans. Hope she gets some attention and a chance to bring in some non-voters who might be at 'give-up stage', thinking there's no way to change the system.
