Over 1 million without power after Isabel

Four days after Hurricane Isabel barreled into the East Coast, thousands of people went back to work Monday without the benefit of home-cooked meals or hot showers, and encountered miles of blank traffic lights and downed power lines.
"No electricity, no water," said Jeanne Spahr, 39, of Dover, Pa., whose power went off Thursday as Isabel approached. "We've been pouring pond water to flush the toilet. It's not smelling so good. I grew up using an outhouse and I don't want to go back to that."

Isabel's effects were still widely evident Monday: Nearly 1.5 million customers remained without electricity. Hot meals were in short supply. Elderly residents had to be shuttled by boat from their flooded homes. And hundreds of roads were shut because of toppled trees and power lines.

1. My wife had to go to work and told to bring drinking water

I finally talked to a friend of mine on the Va. peninsula, the house he lived in was totalled. It was right on the water. He got all of his stuff out and is going to stay with a friend in Williamsburg.

i thought you were talking about bagdad..but then i realized that there`s only 1.5 million with out power instead of most of bagdad..it`s really a good thing we are giving his friends 87 billion+ to fix iraq that way the insurance companies can raise their rates,the counties and states will have to raise taxes, and the utilities can raise their rates. wow, what a perfect storm!!!

3. Neighbor's power still out

Should be back on by Tuesday........they've got extension cords running to a house with power so that the kids can watch TV!

We had a lot of downed tree limbs but minimal damage to the house. My daughter's house lost some siding and a good portion of her tree.

4. You guys got to stop and think about your country! I know we're

supposed to blindly say we're the greatest thing on Earth and everything we do and make is the greatest buttttt... isn't that our Repukelican/Robertson type leaders just setting us up for destruction?

Issy was a Category 2 when it hit? In SE Asia, where the construction and workpersonship is supposed to be low quality, there are about 6 to 25 typhoons, hurricanes, per year. Cat 2-5 mix. There never is this much damage/inconvenience. Considering most SE Asia countries don't have all these rules and bloated Government payrolls of building inspectors and rules bureaucracy using up $billions.

Has any honest university research group actually compared the tax dollars we pay plus the damages caused by disasters...

compared to:

not having a tax sink hole of bueaucracy and let the hurricanes... blow

and we could still probably owned 5 extra summer homes with our savings?

I guess having 3 words, Hurricane, Typhoon, and Cyclone for the same thing is meant to make life interesting. It's like Junior, Chimpy, and Shit-For-Brains all for the same fresh steaming pile of shit in the park.
