WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's environmental record came under heavy attack on Capitol Hill on Tuesday as Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt sought to win Senate confirmation as head of the Environmental Protection Agency.
...
Yet Democrats made little mention of Leavitt in their opening statements at his confirmation hearing, aiming their fire instead at the Republican president.
``Why does the White House reject clear evidence that global warming is a real and growing threat?'' Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut asked in a prepared statement.
``Why will the White House not disclose information regarding the public health impact of its recent rollback of Clean Air standards?'' added Lieberman, a 2004 presidential candidate.
...
At Tuesday's hearing, Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, asked Leavitt: ``Are you going to ramp up enforcement of (federal environmental) laws?''
``The goal is compliance,'' Leavitt responded.
``That isn't being done today,'' Wyden said.
While Republican senators rose to the defense of Bush, Sen. Jim Jeffords, a Vermont independent, voiced the sentiment of many critics when he said: ``The record of the Environmental Protection Agency under this president is abysmal.''
