Vatican source say John Paul suffering intestinal problem

VATICAN CITY, Sept. 24 — Pope John Paul II canceled his weekly general audience for Wednesday morning because of an intestinal problem, Vatican sources said.

THE TWO SOURCES said that the problem was not serious but that the pope’s doctors had advised him to rest.

The pope, 83, has canceled his general audience on short notice only a handful of times during his papacy of nearly 25 years.

The pope was to have returned to the Vatican from the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, for the audience at the Vatican.

John Paul appeared in good overall condition at his last televised appearance Sunday, and he held private audiences at the residence on Monday and Tuesday.

1. The media has been quite ghoulish in their death watch on JP II.

I've been told that various news organizations have been renting apartments that look out on St. Peter's Square for years, just waiting. . .

His partial paralysis makes him look much older and it's hard to judge what his health really is like. He still speaks to audiences in several languages so I think his brain is still functioning well.

I applaud John Paul II for NOT retiring from the papacy. Some people are uncomfortable seeing him with his physical health failing but he's offering a lesson to the world in acceptance of the inevitable senescence of human beings.

I pray he will be well enough to celebrate his 25th year as pope next month.

Didn't the Second Vatican Council decree that for the good of the church bishops must retire at a reasonable age (was it 70?). What an example this "the bishop of Rome" has been setting, for some 13 years now! Does he think that Christ won't be able to find another Vicar if and when he leaves the scene?
