9/11 Panel Seeks More Documents From White House
9/11 Panel Seeks More Documents From White House

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 24, 2003; Page A10

The Bush administration has significantly improved cooperation with an independent commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but the White House still has failed to grant access to many crucial documents, the commission's leaders said yesterday.

After months of negotiations and public complaints from the commission, the administration has provided the panel access to more than 2 million pages of documents and has helped arrange nearly 300 interviews and briefings with government officials.

But the bipartisan commission's leaders, former New Jersey governor Thomas Kean (R) and former representative Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.), said in an interim report released yesterday that many documents were released only recently, and some remain the subject of negotiations with the White House.

The slow pace in acquiring documents and testimony -- along with the commission's decision to refrain from issuing findings until it is closer to completing a report -- has angered many families of victims of the terrorist attacks. Representatives from one group, the Family Steering Committee, issued a "report card" yesterday awarding the commission a "D" in most areas and urging it to better inform the public.

1. The scope of this inquiry is limited
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 06:29 AM by teryang
Questions such as the response of the armed forces on the day of the attack, the *residents actions on the day of attack, the anthrax attacks and so on are outside the scope of inquiry. The actual causes of the collapse of the twin towers and the destruction of evidence relevant to that are outside the scope of the inquiry as well. This is what the chief investigator indicated in response to a very good call in question.

This investigation is mostly a ruse to get the public to think a real investigation is taking place. It is completely hamstrung in what it can look at.

2. You're saying that if something concerning 9/11/01 is suspicious,
that questions need to be raised, then it is outside the scope of the investigation?

4. This is what the chief investigator said
...on cspan. Those questions are beyond the scope of this particular investigation's mandate. Primarily they are looking at the intelligence and investigatory failures which occurred beforehand. These other issues are beyond the scope of the investigation. She didn't say that these were not valid areas of inquiry but that this investigation would not be looking at them because it was beyond her mandate.

5. How can there be 'improved cooperation' and denial of 'crucial documents'.
...at the same time?

- The Bushies are denying access to the very documents they need to run a real investigation. What a snow job.

7. They have subpoena power
I saw a press breifing on c-span last night- the power was written into the legislation. They can get what they want. They could cause a real stir.

Hamilton said that they didn't want to use the court route because it would involve laywers and people would be more guarded about what they say.:wtf: OKAY!

8. Obstruction of justice is a crime. So is conspiracy in the ...
commission of a criminal act (also subject to RICO statutes). So is terrorism, murder, and treason. The Bush/PNAC/BFEE cabal are guilty of all of these crimes. The 9/11 Commission has tried for the last year to get this same damned information from the White House. This press release looks almost exactly like one from last month, and the one before.

How long is the cabal going to be allowed to commit obstruction of justice, and impede this investigation? The 9/11 families, and all Americans, should be loudly protesting and demanding justice. The American people need to understand what this administration is doing, and to whom.
