Father Defends Airman Charged With Spying

Aiding the Enemy?

Sept. 24— A U.S. Air Force translator could face the death penalty if convicted of espionage, but his father and some colleagues suggest he may have merely been trying to give humane treatment to the suspected terrorists imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Although Al Halabi apparently knew Yee, the Muslim chaplain in custody, there was no indication as to whether investigators suspected there was any kind of conspiracy to breach security at the base. Yee has not been charged.

Al Halabi's father... told ABCNEWS he believed his son is a victim of a frame-up or a misunderstanding.

And a number of military officials at Guantanamo who served with Al Halabi and Yee said they would be surprised if either man was guilty of spying in the traditional sense.

These officials said it's most likely the men may have been trying to help contact inmates' family members or help the situation of the prisoners on a "human level." Interpreters, chaplains and interrogators all spend a lot of time with the inmates and often develop some sort of rapport with the prisoners.
