Pentagon links Syria to prison camp spy ring
A top Pentagon commander has said an urgent inquiry is under way into a possible Syrian-linked spy ring among Muslim US military personnel at the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.

General Peter Pace, vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said two arrests already reported - of an army Muslim chaplain and air force Arabic translator - had sparked serious concerns about the maximum security prison camp, which holds 660 alleged al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists.

US military authorities are also investigating possible security breaches by up to four other members of the air force and navy. Officials would not say whether any of them had served at the prison camp in Cuba.

General Pace suggested on Wednesday that the investigation had expanded beyond the espionage-related arrests of James "Youssef" Yee, an army captain and Islamic cleric at Guantanamo Bay, and Senior Airman Ahmad al-Halabi, an Arabic translator at the prison, telling reporters that "we don't presume the two we know about is all there is, nor do we presume there's more".

2. I Would Say Possible
But unlikely. Gitmo is in an isolated area and I don't see what Syria could do in any event.

More likely Asskrap and Rummy are seeing something that isn't there or trying to pull another distraction.

3. The information doesn't sound all that sensitive to me.
What it does sound like is overzealous government agencies grasping at any Islamic straws to make a case against Syria.

Where's the Syria connection? All the article discusses is that the chaplain had blueprints, knew which prisoners were in what cells, had correspondence from the inmates. Gee, ya think a chaplain might need to know who is in what cell in order to visit them?

It seems Gitmo is being purged of people who might open their mouths or try to help the prisoners.

So, hey, it is tinfoil, but we've seen the BS cooked up over going to war. Ya think a few more destroyed lives matters to the BFEE?

4. I'm guessing they just need to take a Valium.
What exact critical state secrets might be hiding there anyway?

7. Syria-ously
Maybe just a long string of anti Syria press that will someday culminate in "justified" missile strikes, covert missions or invasions in Bush's favorite region.Maybe more fluff to remind the American public why were out there fighting these sneaky Muslims. Even in maximum security prisons these guys are still tough to keep an eye on.Jeez,it must be tough being G.W.Look for this Syria issue to continue, they are definitely on some checklist somewhere in the White House.

5. Question... was Pace one of those elevated by Rummy through his
purges of the non-ideologically pure (to his ideology)?

6. Now focusing on the traitor within
we are moving to re-internalize the terror, just in time for Ann Coulter to refurbish Joe McCarthy.
Double plus ungood.
This sort of thing is so wearing.

8. quote: "alleged al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists"
alleged

2 years later and they are still only fucking "alleged", how long until we know FOR CERTAIN that these people committed crimes? Are we even TRYING???

I still think much of this "spying" is in the form of whistle-blowing/ like the Chief Chimp said about Saddam: "We expect there to be transparency, people who have got something to hide make us nervous"

no shit George, no Shit.

I guess they can't release any of those names, 2 years later, because there are still terra-ists out there who DON'T know their buddy got captured? :eyes:
