BBV Oliphant:Broward officials picked fight to take focus off questionable
full title: Oliphant: Broward officials picked fight to take focus off questionable voting machines

By Scott Wyman
Staff writer
Posted September 25 2003

Broward County Elections Supervisor Miriam Oliphant accused county commissioners Wednesday of picking a fight over how much money she needs to run her office in order to divert attention from concerns about the voting equipment they purchased.

In her strongest attack on her critics in months, Oliphant charged the cuts that commissioners made this week to her $14.7 million spending request are an example of continued meddling in her operations. She questioned the commissioners' judgment, given the issues surrounding the voting machinery they bought in late 2001 over her objections.

Commissioners have expressed growing apprehension about electronic voting and have ordered a study of whether they should replace the new touch-screen machines or retrofit them to print copies of each ballot.

"From day one with the introduction of technology, we have had problems with the machines and problems with the utilization of the machines," Oliphant said.

I wouldn't want to pick a fight with this lady. I'd want her on my side any day.

4. Maybe a little
:P She's not bad on the eyes either, which isn't unusual for women fighting against Jeb.

2. This may be the worst news for the Bush regeime
They are even getting heat from FL. I have noticed that most states are asking questions, except TX. The Bush days will be over when that happens.

5. Mr. Wyman is an excellent reporter, "like a tick on a dog"

I suggest you read the many reports he has filed on the BBV issues.

Ms. Oliphant has a hell of a lot of explaining to do and so far, has managed to get away with the proverbial "slap on the wrist" despite hiring drunks, members of her own family, knowingly allowing thousands of votes to go uncounted, misappropriating funds. I could go on. She is an absolute disgrace and should be penalized to the full extent of the law.

On edit- for her to NOW claim that the voting technology was substandard is enough to make one :puke:

I reiterate my statement: she is an absolute disgrace and should be penalized to the full extent of the law.

6. Jeb won't fire her
Oliphant has very little credibility in this county. The County Commissioners asked Jeb to remove her prior to the 2002 election, he refused.

She has basically no support and has been represented regularly in the news as mismanaging the budget. I am a little worried that BBV will take a backseat to her performance.

That’s why I called yesterday to see how the $1,000 figure to upfit the machines for printers got floated in the papers and radio. I so hope I am wrong, but am thinking people might tune out the real problem and reject additional printer expense just based Oliphant, her performance and budget problems.

It is going to take the legislature (if I understand correctly) to even allow the printers, which in turn will require many, many citizens from across the state to be motivated to make the call to their rep. And the legislature is heavily republican. With cities being virtually broke – Ft Laud. is one – I am not as optimistic as others about the outcome unless there is a huge push to educate in simple sound bites.

8. I'm already on it symbolman!
You are the best! Tho I rarely post, I have been here a long time and am one of your biggest fans. TBTM and BBV are my 2 most important issues and I can't begin to express how much I appreciate the difference you are making. Soon as this jobless recovery hits my house, I am definitely making a donation.

11. Probably not a bad idea
Those card packs hit LBN and TV all the time.

Meanwhile, symbolman's excellent work gets hardly any play and the real issues rarely hit the mainsteam US press.
