134,000 Lost Jobs in August 'Mass Layoffs'

More U.S. workers lost their jobs in large layoffs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported yesterday, another sign that employers are continuing to trim payrolls even as the economy strengthens.

The BLS tracks what it calls "mass layoffs," or firings of more than 50 workers in a single month by a single employer, by compiling reports on initial claims for unemployment benefits filed with state agencies. The numbers include temporary and permanent firings.

About 134,000 workers lost their jobs in 1,258 mass layoffs nationwide last month, up from the 128,103 employees who were fired in 1,248 such actions in August 2002, the BLS said.

The mass-layoff report is a snapshot of monthly employment changes across the country. Manufacturing took the hardest hit of any sector in August, accounting for nearly a third of all mass layoffs and more than a third of the number of workers who lost jobs, the report said. Job losses also were reported in transportation equipment, textile mills, machinery and food manufacturing.

California, New York, Illinois, North Carolina and Texas had the most mass layoffs, the report said.

3. He's correct.................
for his ilk there is no "bad economy". For millions of what reamins of the "middle class" however, hope is in sharp decline of ever getting high paying manufacturing jobs again. The corporate elite in this country are not hurting, it's the middle and lower classes again that are taking the majority of the punishment for this administrations failed policies.

8. Kudlow does not have to worry about....
how he is going to have to pay rent from month to month without a job or how to put food on the table for your kids day after day with a very low paying job....for him the economy is great because Bush looks out for people like Kudlow.

9. Even If Larry Kudlow Didn't Have Money. . .
. . .he'd be incapable of identifying a good or bad economy. Whichever University granted this guy a Ph.D. in economics needs to have their accrediation revoked, STAT!

these August numbers are going to pale in comparrison to November's. This is when corporations show their true colors, right around holiday time.

5. Just Sent the Link and Article
to my email list with the following preamble:

Hi All,

As usual, the Bush administration is up to its old reporting tricks. Remember, last month when we were told that 97,000 Americans lost there jobs in August? Well the truth is much worse as told by the attached Washington Post article.

The truth is that 134,000 Americans lost jobs! Seems that Bush and company are always telling us after the fact what the truth really is.

Well the truth is Americans are catching on to this game of deception.

You may be hanging on economically, but how much longer will it be before your job is sent overseas or eliminated? How much longer before your family suffers irreversible misfortune?

In Bush's economy, your number is probably already up. You just don't know when the alarm bell of unemployment will ring.

Better starting scraping together your Bush Pioneer donation; I am sure those folks are not suffering!

Enjoy

I also cc'ed my elected representatives, all republicons.

It's time we played tough with these folks!

I swear these people will deny that this country is in MAJOR trouble, even at the cost of every middle and lower-class job that exists in America!

7. Yeah I'd love to know what economy they're talking about
This reminds me of exactly the same economy that sent 41 packing back to Kennibunkport. At least 41 was smart enough not to get stuck in a quagmire in Iraq.
