Bands Rock Against Bush
Sonic Youth, the Donnas, the Liars, the Locust and Erase Errata are among the groups who have pledged their support for Bands Against Bush, a self-explanatory new artistic collective dedicated to lending its support to the "struggle against a world of perpetual fear and violence bolstered by the Bush administration."

1. if the election is not fixed, it doesn't matter how much money * raises
there is a growing grass roots effort to get this mis-admin out of the WH, which makes me very happy.

We need to support those willing to stand up against Bush, even when it probably means they will be banned from some corporate radio stations!

13. not with you there
using music with out permission{i.e. you pay for it} is stealing.
i have arguments with record labels and the arrangements they make with artists. but copying music isn't one of them.

22. That argument reveals the holes in the theory that file-sharing is...
...illegal. Wasn't it established years ago that sharing recorded music via dubbed cassette tapes was legal as long as the copied music was not used commercially? The Internet may make music more widely and anonymously available but I've never understood how those circumstances make it illegal. After all, if you could trace any given song back to the first person who shared it on the Internet, you would find that he or she purchased it somewhere.

21. Don't But CDs?
Ummmm,

As someone with extensive knowledge of the music business, I can tell you that boycotting CDs will only kill royalty payments to artists for their Performance copyrights and songwriters for their song royalties. Your argument is ridiculous: that artists should be happy to give away their intellectual property and we should steal it from them. The RIAA isn't perfect, but labels spend enormous amounts of money to market music and lose money on 80% of their artists. That is why royalty payments are not high most of the time, because they haven't made any money! If you are a hit however, the dough flows.

Npobody should boycott CDs unless they want to see the ability of musicians to make a living end.

And if that group had any musical talent whatsoever I'd actually go out and see them in concert.

:)

It is cool that they're doing this though.

dont buy their albums, but rather go to their concerts. They are paid dirt for royalties by the greedy recording labels.

30. Re:
Wrong. Artists aren't paid dirt for their royalties, the labels take a huge risk in spending hundreds of thousands to promote. If they make that money back then the dough flows. Besides, your solution, to boycott CDs only will hurt artists further. I am shocked at the level of disinformation on this thread. Songwriters write songs. That is how they make a living. If you boycott CDs or ILLEGALLY COPY MUSIC, you are taking waya their ability to make a living period. Get that through your head.

39. there is no such problem . . .
with a certain label based in cascadia. they basically split everything between band and label in half. no wonder some of major label artist come to them to do recording because they don't want to get screwed over again.

24. Some are on RIAA labels but their older stuff isn't
So buy that

SOnic Youth is on Geffen which is a riaa member , but older Sonic Youth(and better) is on SST which is not.

The Donna's are on Atlantic now which is an riaa member, but older Donnas(and Better) is on Lookout records which is not.

The Liars are on Mute which is not riaa

Erase Erratas releases are all on non riaa member labels

The Locusts releases are all on non riaa member labels

Ray Manzerak produced the first 2 albums by the world's greatest punk band X. Played keyboards on the first one.

After Jim Morrison passed away, the remaining members came close to hiring Iggie Pop as the lead singer. Iggie was a BIG Doors fan.

25. This is the generation
that can have a huge political impact. They can make themselves a force to be reckoned with. They can become the demographic that politians court, if they make themselves a large voting block. I have tremendous faith in them. They are a well educated group as a whole, who will pay all their lives for some of the policies instituted by *. I trust they are plenty fired up about this admin.

I had trouble with the link (work PC). Is there contact information? Maybe we could drop an email their way with info about getting voter registration people at the concert?

32. hi there
i want to make some correction/clearfication on things so there won't be any misunderstanding on what we, or at least i do over the internet as web admin for bands against bush OLYMPIA. please know that if any of thing i say come across as offensive, that is because i am ESL.

1) bab - bands against bush - is never about sonic youth, or the donnas. i sort of know how sonic youth said they want to show aliance with bab (they played with dub narcotic at bumbershoot). while i appriciate those main stream band supporting us, it is very important for all those unnamed bands, who usually make about $20/show on tour, needs to be recognized as the most herioic. or even better, recognize that those organizer whose name never be recognized by mainstream media is the most heroic.

2) when dealing with main stream media, it has been constant struggle because they always want to make this movement about one person, or a copule of major bands. it's about all those unnamed people who came to meeting every week to organize and did their best to make it happens.

3) purchasing cd of band listed as "colation of the willing," will most unlikely help advaincing bab cause. incease sale on their cd just because they showed solidarity with us, i don't see how that would help us solve problem present in our society. How would buying more sonic youth CD help make the world better place? Seriously.

and i don't think that's what they wanted. further, most of the important bands involved, you are most unlikely that you'll be able to purchase their cd at Best Buy or Camelot Record at Northgate mall.

4) Magic Rat - this is not about who play the best music. this is about what the artist is willing to do or what they think of the world we live in.

5) Brucey and others - I want to make it clear again, supporting bands will not help ( i don't know, how anyone would support a band other than buying their cd, or cheer "we love you!") anyone advance our cause and what we did for the last 7 months. you would need to support the organizer of this movement, the one who went to show and start talking to their friend about it. Get a meeting going, kept pushing when the attendance and the number of organizer kept dropping.

6) the originally we are mostly focused on having major protest, featuring speakers, so that the kids in our scene would learn something that they never thought of. music is added on.

7) we don't want to hire someone to come and "entertain us".

8) this is not lolapalooza, or warp tour

9) it was dishertning that collaboration between du/bab didn't happen

---

that said, please have a look at this map

http://bandsagainstbush.com/contact.php

there is a huge gap in mid west and south east. those are the area that has been impossible to outreach. if you can put flyer about it and seek out someone to putout a simple house show, please email me at jirc@attbi.com

outreaching in texas has been extreamly hard. there is *one* person in texas doing bab. her name is marie. with a help from bab friendly The Gossip, she has distrubuted 300 flyers asking to get invovled (to the audince she thought would be sympathetic and anti bush).

She has recieved 1 phone call. that was 2 month ago.

Marie is not quitting. she feel that Dallas, Texas needs something like bab to happen. but she tells me that people in dallas are so scared to talk about what they think ob GWB.

At any rate, i would appriciate if you would read what rolling stone didn't really borther telling you about. what bab is about, how it started, by visiting this section of page, and read through first 3 articles:

http://bandsagainstbush.com/resources.php#article

and give us some money. oly needs to rent a porta pottie.
