Six Convicted of Paying off North Korea to Hold Summit
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 09:21 AM by demdave
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Six prominent South Korean officials were convicted Friday of secretly transferring money to North Korea ahead of a historic 2000 summit, the first to be punished in a scandal that tarnished the image of a Nobel Peace prize-winning former president.

The six, including two key figures in the administration of former President Kim Dae-jung, were given suspended prison terms immediately after the conviction by the Seoul District Criminal Court

The court found them guilty of secretly paying $100 million in violation of South Korea's strict foreign currency regulations.

3. I Can See Paying N Korea
As an investment in infrastructure and manufacturing facilities to make money, but I don't understand why they would have to resort to secrecy and bribery in a deal that benefits both nations.

I suppose I don't understand the political climate in the region well enough.

4. South Korea has strict laws about the government transfer of money to N.K.
When they paid for a summit with the sole intent of getting a Nobel Peace prize, that was a crime.
