NEWS ALERT: Consumer Product Safety Commission Announces Recall of Segway
No link yet, just a headline atop the NY Times webpage.

Perhaps Chimp is exacting a bit of revenge for his little trip?

2. Unfortunately
Nothing is idiot-proof. The "man-eating" pretzel proved that.

5. Here's an announcement on the Segway website
http://www.segway.com/support/recalls/recall_001.html

The machine tips over when there's not enough battery power to keep it moving upright (well, duh!). Three accidental falls have been reported. No mention of the Pretzeldent's somersault.

Hazard: Under certain operating conditions, particularly when the batteries are near the end of charge, some Segway HTs may not deliver enough power, allowing the rider to fall. This can happen if the rider speeds up abruptly, encounters an obstacle, or continues to ride after receiving a low-battery alert.
...
Description: This recall involves all Segway HT i167 ("i Series") models sold to consumers. In addition, Segway LLC is including all e167 ("e Series") and i167 models sold to commercial users, and all p133 ("p Series") models sold to consumers in test markets.
...
Remedy: Call Segway LLC toll-free at 877-889-9020 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday (ET) for information on how to receive a free software upgrade. Segway LLC is directly contacting owners of these products.

7. I talked to a man who was riding one of these
at the very rural fair in Maine. He was from New Hampshire and seemed to have the thing under control.. However--he was no shill for Segway. I asked him if he ever fell off of it and he said "yes"--he said that he once decided to run the thing through a puddle , only to discover that under the puddle was a ditch that threw him off the Segway-he reported real serious injuries-- this guy was over seventy years of age to begin with. I mentioned Bush falling off of one recently while he was in Kennebunkport--and the guy said well if you do something stupid you will fall off of it--and all of those people waiting on line to buy their tickets to the fair got a kick out of it when I said " What? George Bush did something stupid? How can that be? " He ignored that comment but people around hearing it, did not. Many laughed.

8. LOL!
Made me think of this line from Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live:

(paraphrase)

"Segway has been released today revolutionizing the way people get hit by cars."

11. They found out that they weren't "fool proof" after all
Of course they "fool proof" claim had not been testing under such EXTREME conditions.
