U.S. firms: Tax deadline, huh?

Sept. 15 due date for companies' quarterly taxes has become more of a mere suggestion.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For most individual taxpayers, April 15 is the usual deadline for paying taxes. But thanks to Congress, U.S. companies are able to delay paying about $6 billion in taxes for two weeks this year.

Including a similar deadline shift in 2001 and one due next year, a Sept. 15 due date for companies' quarterly estimated taxes is becoming less a deadline than a mere suggestion.

Tucked into the tax cut bill enacted last May, which included more generous depreciation and expensing for businesses, was a partial deferral of companies' estimated September payments.
