Defense bill to benefit Florida
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PENSACOLA - Florida military bases, local universities and defense contractors will benefit from a $368 billion defense spending bill awaiting President Bush's signature.
Jet engines for the Florida Air National Guard, new training planes for Panhandle Navy bases and increased production of armored vehicles by a Jacksonville company are included in the bill that passed the House 407-15 on Wednesday and the Senate 95-0 on Thursday
A $19.5 million appropriation to continue production of the Joint Primary Training Aircraft System is seen as a key element to protect Whiting Field, a naval air station about 25 miles northeast of Pensacola, from closure or downsizing.
The Air Guard is slated to get $13 million for new engines and a $4 million communications system, while $20 million is earmarked for the Army Reserve and National Guard to buy more armored vehicles from Armor Holdings Inc. of Jacksonville, according to a news release by Florida's two Democratic senators, Bill Nelson and Bob Graham.
