Dean Says Jobs Come Before Fixing Budget

Dean Says Jobs Come Before Fixing Budget

SNIP:

WASHINGTON - Howard Dean said he would like to balance the budget in his first term even if it means limiting spending on domestic programs dear to Democrats.

But if he beats nine other Democrats to capture the nomination and then ousts President Bush, Dean told The Associated Press, he might have to keep the budget in the red beyond four years to fund his plan for mass transit, renewable energy, road construction, broadband telecommunications and school building — as well as to fight unemployment.

SNIP:

The front-running candidate often boasts that he had a record of balancing the budget while he was Vermont governor. He holds that record up as part of his argument that he is not too liberal to beat Bush.

In 1995, he said he supported a balanced-budget amendment, but now says he would rather not have one so he can have flexibility if in the White House.

SNIP:

Dean showed great affection for former President Clinton, saying that Clinton "had more political talent in his little finger than anybody since Franklin Roosevelt."

On foreign policy, Dean said one of his first goals as president would be to restore relations with France, Germany and other nations angered by the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

1. Right on! Dean is a first class administrator.
A true leader gathers the facts then decides what is important. The doctor has the qualifications of a leader.

2. Yep
That's why we need to cut the payroll tax, eliminating the first 20k from being taxed, so that more of us can shop at Walmart and Target, creating jobs in China.

3. It seems that he doesn't acknowledge that
jobs are intertwined with fixing the budget. Common sense dictates that a sane biz will not invest in a debtor.

13. You would be surprised
The Constitution isn't worth the paper it's written on. So the only conclusion is that the US is badly managed biz.

10. Uh, that is exactly what he has been saying...
...since just about day one. I suspect he's read or listened to Paul Krugman, realized that this hole is deep, deep, deep and knows it is going to take some time to dig out of.

5. He Needs To Think About A Tax Credit
For manufacturers bringing jobs into the country. Remember, the Regan/Bush/Dimbo policies were to give hefty credits for relocating core businesses off-shore and out of the US.

7. I'd make that a tax penalty for jobs sent OUT of the country
myself. I'm sick and tired of tax credits to corporations and all the other corporate welfare.

11. At least stop letting them write the costs off...
...of their taxes. It's a damn shame when the taxes of working people are given to corporations as deductions to help underwrite the costs of moving production overseas. Close your plant, lay off your employees and write it off on your taxes. It's insane.

12. What About Both?
India is looking at a $1.2 Trillion windfall from IT outsourcing by 2010 and has already started to set up localized centers in China, South America and Europe. Why not penalize short-sighted greed and reward the companies that are willing to keep a large part of that 1.2 Trillion in the US?

14. Eloriel, I agree.
If a corporation leaves the USA to avoid taxes then that corp is not a part of America. Your either with us or against us!

8. He's correct about that. People need jobs! Once we have more
people back in the work force, the benefits start to work on a LOT of our economic problems right now. More people able to pay taxes, more people able to buy stuff, more people back in the system, more people with enhanced optimism. WE NEED THAT DESPERATELY!!!

9. Doesn't it make common sense?
more jobs equals more consumer items sold. Also, workers pay taxes. More people working helps plug the holes created by the insane tax cut policy of this administration.
