EPA Balks at Halting Pesticide-Child Study
By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer

Thursday, April 7, 2005

(04-07) 16:36 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

The Environmental Protection Agency won't rush to cancel a study on how pesticides affect children despite threats from Senate Democrats to hold up confirmation of the new EPA administrator until the study is canned.

Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer of California and Bill Nelson of Florida demanded Wednesday that EPA end the study, saying they will block a Senate vote on the confirmation of Stephen Johnson to be the agency's administrator.

snip...
The study is to determine how pesticides, which can cause neurological damage in children, and chemicals such as flame retardants, might be ingested, inhaled or otherwise absorbed through food, drink, soil, crop residue and household dust.

EPA had planned to give participating families $970 plus a camcorder and children's clothes, but critics inside and outside the agency said that might encourage low-income families to use pesticides in their homes. The two-year study was to be conducted on the families of 60 children in Duval County, Fla.

1. Wait a minute ...

Are you telling me that the EPA is actually ENCOURAGING people to expose their children to pesticides???

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

The RWers want stem-cell research banned because they believe that it uses "human beings" as test subjects (even though the cells being used are nowhere near the equivalent of a human being), but they have no problem with exposing LIVING, BREATHING CHILDREN to pesticides in order to conduct a study?!?!?!? Culture of life, my ass! This is further proof that the "pro-life" movement has nothing to do with life and everything to do with controlling women! The only time they want to protect a "child" is when it's an undeveloped group of cells in a uterus! :grr: :grr: :grr:

This is human experimentation! These children have no say in the matter. How can this possibly be legal? Oh wait, I forgot ... legality is irrelevant. :eyes:

4. They don't care about people, or children. Once someone's born, they're
on their own.

6. Mike Malloy covered this story in detail last week on his show
The babies are black -- poor families.

This is not a representative study -- beside the fact that this is absolutely wrong to use subjects who have no vote in being poisoned.

13. Both Malloy and Randi Rhodes on AAR have covered the story several times.
Today on CSPAN, I saw the news conference with Senators Nelson and Boxer addressing the issue. Boxer is so cool...she had her "visual aids" out again. (This time, a huge blown-up pic of the on-line ad for this Program...encouraging parents to expose their kids to toxic substances, in exchange for a free video camera and a T-shirt!!)

Boxer made several calls to the person at EPA, and it sounds like she's drawn enough attention to it...that there may be some delaying of the Study...for now.

But more needs done. Sounds like Petition-signing time again.

2. Just heard about this tonight
on Free Speech TV and I`m outraged. FSTV reported that the "study" will involve children under the age of one year. This is awful.

3. and the study is bullshit designed for chem companies to show no damage..
is done.
they're designing short (2 year) studies because they know the damage takes longer to show up. they are trying to help the chem companies score some good PR for pesticides already deemed dangerous.
this is really fucked up.

5. This is what it has come to....
There truly is evil in the world and thy name is republican; neocon and epa are among thy agents to cause blight and death among the innocent children and the helpless in the world.

Vile are the so-called christains who support the torture and death of children. A special place in hell is reserved for them.

7. the poor as guinea pigs.....nothing new in America
My country is using money and goods as incentives to, freely and legally, harm people's children. Outrage alone should be enough to stop it (simple decency should have been enough for it to have never been an issue)...but in America, one has to bargain for the right of people to not be poisoned by their own government.

and people wonder why torture is acceptable to many Americans...

Anyone really think Bush Inc will be held accountable for their actions in a country that allows these things?

when you prey on the weak and the helpless and call it a good...you've lost your way.

was Josef Mengele, who devised monstrous experiments designed to torture people at the Nazi death camps.

12. Read about this last October...
and posted the article on another board where it was pretty much NeoCon majority Vs. Liberal minority. Even the NeoCons were horrified at the thought of testing pesticides on children. It was one of the few posts that everyone agreed on.
