Nigeria and the US giant ChevronTexaco on Friday awarded a $1.7-billion contract to build a gas plant in the Niger Delta to a consortium, which includes the US oil services firm Halliburton.

Halliburton is currently under investigation in Nigeria, France and the United States into its alleged paying of kickbacks on a previous gas contract.

The firm was also sharply criticised by the Nigerian government in September last year for its alleged failure to co-operate with an investigation into the loss of nuclear materials from one of its sites in the Niger Delta.

Funsho Kupolokun, managing director of the state Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), said that the contract to build the Escravos Gas To Liquids (EGTL) plant had been awarded to a group dubbed Team JKS.
