Juan hits Canada's eastern coast with winds, torrential rain; Kate strengthens farther south

By Associated Press, 9/29/2003 11:31

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) Hurricane Juan lashed Nova Scotia with winds and torrential rains, killing two people and knocking out power to thousands before being downgraded to a tropical storm early Monday as it churned toward Prince Edward Island.

/snip/

Farther south in the Atlantic, meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kate neared hurricane strength Monday as it swirled far from land about 835 miles southwest of Lajes in the Azores Islands. Kate had maximum sustained winds near 70 mph 4 mph short of hurricane strength and was moving toward the northeast at around 20 mph.

Hundreds of Nova Scotia residents were evacuated from low-lying areas and residents were warned to stay indoors Monday because falling trees had knocked down a ''terrific'' number of still-live power lines.

The seas were very high here in Maine yesterday. Big waves and a very high tide.

1. On an interesting side note...
Prince Edward Island is having a provincial election today and, thanks to using paper ballots, it will go on as usual.

2. We took a direct hit last night.
....it's impossible to get through city streets and power lines are down leaving 200,000 homes in the dark. An entire roof was sitting on the highway this morning - flew off the apartment complex and landed still in one piece.

Across the Northumberland Strait....

PEI is without power on 2/3 of the island and looks like oil lamps will save the day:

"Wigginton said he's advised the clerks at polling stations to gather kerosene lanterns and candles, which could be needed when the vote counting gets underway after 7 p.m. "

....I'm having visions of Road to Avonlea

8. I visited beautiful Halifax just a few weeks ago...
and was saddened by the damage shown on the news. I KNOW Nova Scotians will take this in stride, they always do. A hearty bunch of folks!

3. Again American Arrogance rears her ugly head
And I know that news reports things that are of prime interest to those watching the news (i.e. Canadian News will have more Canadian-oriented news stories, but the US won't because most Canadian-oriented news stories have no bearing on the US, etc)

But I find it laughable and sad that this weekend, two things that recently happened in the US happened abroad---

1) Major power outage in Italy
2) Major hurricane hits Nova Scotia

and narry a word on the telly about it.

When there was a Power Outage in the US, for HOURS AND HOURS we saw NOTHING but videos of New Yorkers sitting in subways waiting to go home, or new yorkers walking up and down the street, or New Yorkers talking on their cellphones (forgetting the fact that hundreds of other cities were affected)

When hurricane Isabel was heading towards the eastern seaboard, all we saw were videos of courageous meterologists standing on the beach, hair flying about their faces, looking tough and invencible at the threat of a rapidly approcaching hurricane.

But nothing for Nova Scotia, which probably SHOULD get more attention just because of the fact that Hurricanes RARELY get that far north, and RARELY make landfall that far north (Rarely being used in contrast to the Southeastern Atlantic Coast, which deals with hurricanes every year, multiple times a year)

You'd just think we could have a bit more interest in what happens around the world. We could have a bit more empathy for the victims of such things, considering we, Americans, went through (and go through) these things.

But no. If it's not on the lower 48's, it just doesn't matter.

sorry for the rant....

4. You are right
Currently, on weather.com, there is not a single mention of the hurricane on the front page. Same thing with CNN.com.

5. Good luck to the Bluenosers!
I've been watching CBC Newsworld, from the other coast ...

Looks like Haligonians are doing a great job of holding things together. That's one tough city! (For the Americans out there -- Halifax is one of the communities that took in stranded airline passengers on 9/11 -- very caring and resilient people, who lost so many of their own in the Explosion, and in the North Atlantic convoys ...)

And I'll bet PEI is going to pull off that election, too. Just saw footage of the Premier voting by flashlight. Way to go, Maritimes!

7. One tough city is right...
Halifax was the site of the world's largest non-nuclear man-made explosion.

6. I don't believe any of this Hurrican Juan business
I was watching the weather channel and as usual there is no weather
whatsoever in either Canada or Mexico. All weather in North America
ceases to exist outside our precious borders.

9. And there's nothing north of Boston
Many time the weather channels will have a graphic over northern New England. And, you're right, Canada doesn't exist. I think it's cool how the weather just stops at the border. How do the clouds know to do that? :eyes:

We got part of this storm but it didn't exist if one just watched US weather channels.

Good luck with the clean-up, Nova Scotians. I love your province.

Your governor offered to send lineman to help us out! That was right neighbourly of ya!
:toast:

Things are slowly getting cleaned up but still no phone service throughout Metro. I can't get in touch with anyone in my family because even cell phones are wonky. Because of crossed lines I spoke briefly with a priest from a Catholic church 1,000 miles away!
