New inquiry in Italian banker's death
The UK's BBC reports that police in the City of London have re-opened inquiries into the death of an Italian banker more than 20 years ago.
Roberto Calvi, chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, a private bank which collapsed with spectacular losses, was found hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge across the Thames River.

At first he was thought to have commited suicide, but Italian police believe he was murdered by the Mafia as punishment for pocketing money they had asked him to launder. Four people were charged earlier this summer and it is thought the aim of the new investigation in London is to help the Italian prosecutor.

Calvi, nicknamed God's Banker because of his Vatican connections, fled Italy after the private bank he chaired, the Banco Ambrosiano, collapsed. The Suicide theory was questioned after forensic tests recently concluded in Germany suggested he had been murdered.

Detective Superintendent Trevor Smith, of the City of London Police, has been asked to begin inquiries into the case on behalf of Dr Luca Tescaroli, the Rome magistrate in charge of the Italian prosecutions.
The City of London Police confirmed the "circumstances surrounding Roberto Calvi's death are currently under active investigation".

The news follows yesterday's announcement from the Vatican that the Pope is appointing 31 new Cardinals later next month. No mention was made of the fate of the notorious Cardinal Marcinkus, who has enjoyed immense diplomatic immunity under the Papal aegis since being investigated for involvement with the Banco Ambrosiano money laundering scam and Calvi's death some 20 years ago.

But such is the Pope's confidence that matters will be resolved to his personal satisfaction that he has included UK-based nominees for the position of Cardinal, including the appointment of the president of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, Archbishop Keith O'Brien, an Irishman with a self-confessed interest in "children's protection issues".

Given the scandals concerning the UK's top prelate Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor and his Welsh conterpart, in a spate of paedophilia cover-ups regarding British Catholic priests going back to just before the murder of Roberto Calvi, the appointment of yet another UK Cardinal seems like a top-priority PR exercise for the ailing Pope.

News reports on London radion stations this morning added that the notorious P2 Lodge, which was central to the Ambrosiano racketeering and money laundering scam, was infamously associated with Nazi child abuse cults directly involved with the illegitimate offspring of Herman Goering, domiciled in UK and Europe for the last 50 years.
(looking for a web link for this one...)
