Texas Press Assn: Texas highway signs to add pro-Bush Message:

<snip>

LAWMAKERS PROUD TEXAS BUSH COUNTRY

Another bill getting a green flag in the Senate last week was House Bill 137, a measure that would have the Texas Department of Transportation add to its 66 "Welcome to Texas" signs that Texas is "proud to be the home of President George W. Bush."

A House amendment mandating that the signs also acknowledge George H.W. Bush, Lyndon Johnson and Dwight Eisenhower was cut by the Senate because it would have cost a lot more money.

Joy... as a sixth generation Texan this makes me puke.... it's even worse than those 'God's Country' signs as you cross into Texas from Oklahoma...

2. They will be tagged in a week... a month tops.
I'll bet they end up replacing those signs several times.

15. Well, I'm not a real Texan. I only lived there for 6 years.
But I did aquire some of that Texas pride...until Shrub!

I loved Ann Richards, and I'm still not exactly sure how this idiot beat her.

I loved the signs "Don't Mess with Texas". But PLEASE don't let 'em put Bush Country on the damn highway signs!

I'd be very ashamed!

9. OK, that's it
First I had to see billboards congratulating Tom DeLay on his win over Richard Morrison, now this????

I'm a native Texan, and proud to say so. That transplant has no claim, other than his silly little "ranch" where he goes to "clear brush". Has anyone ever seen an animal on his "ranch"?

I wonder how many of these signs will the the objects of vandals?

32. As another 6th generation Texan
I know I'll puke every time I see one. I already hate the "President George Bush Tollway". That was when Junior was governor, so they added "President" so as not to confuse the two. If they build another, maybe it will be "Preznit George Bush Pothole Road".

35. Oh, for the love of Pete....
I do not want to have to deal with seeing that crossing into TX from NM whenever I go home to San Antonio to visit my folks.

Too bad I don't own a dog...I'd take my dog on trips and let him pee at the border.

And to not acknowledge Eisenhower or LBJ is just WRONG.

37. Tagging a sign like that would be wrong
it would show disrespect for the President.

If people were to spray words on it like Liar, or Murderer, or Impeach NOW! That would definately violate some law and undermine people's respect for the man who holds the office. Heck they would probably be inclined to put a mustache or pirate's eyepatch on the picture as well. That would be defacing public property...or maybe it's private property...are those Clearchannel signs public if they are funded by the state? I'm just glad that we're able to have them so we can all receive important advertizements as we drive around...I've often thought how glad I am we don't have drives that were all just boring trees and sky...it's a lot more entertaining to read about Bacardi and the Local MORNING ZOO radio jocks as I cruise down the Freeway.

Oh where was I? That's right...I don't think it's right to deface things like billboards...especially ones being used for partisan political purposes. I think it's almost as bad as those taggers who put LIES on all the newspaper dispensers.

I can't imagine anyone would actually do things like this...I mean how far would you have to be pushed to go out of your way to make a statement like that?

I don't know. I would never do it. And I would always discourage others from doing so.

So don't do that kind of thing if you live in Texas. It would be wrong.

Support your local Clearchannel Billboard...make your daily drive more enjoyable!

:D

41. I live three miles from the Nixon Library
Don't know how may liquored up pals I've restrained from torching the god damn thing over the years. Not worth a trip to prison, really. Still in all, god knows there's an unlimited supply of cow poo in Texas - on the ground and in the legislature. Much harder to get caught flinging cow poo at a sign from a passing vehicle I'd say... nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Or a little double aught might just be the ticket too.

Have fun!

42. I grew up in Los Angeles
Near the Marina Freeway (which connects Slauson Blvd to
Marina del Rey). I remember in the 70's it was renamed
the Richard M. Nixon freeway a few months before Nixon resigned
in disgrace. Now it is back to being the Marina Freeway.

I look forwart to a repeat performance with the Texas stuff?
