Condom Ads Hit Network TV
The First Prime-Time Network Television Condom Commercial Will Air Tonight

By ERIC NOE

Jun. 1, 2005 - Two television networks will make history tonight when they broadcast commercials for Trojan condoms during prime-time viewing hours, the first such network exposure for the male contraceptive devices.

The WB network has agreed to air Trojan commercials after 9 p.m., starting with a 30-second spot during "Smallville." NBC has also approved a Trojan commercial, and Trojan was negotiating on Tuesday to place a commercial in the network's 10 p.m. hour tonight.

Though no formal government or industry restrictions prevent condom commercials from being shown in prime time, condom ads have traditionally been banished to late-night hours or cable networks. But television airwaves have recently become more open to products dealing with sexual health, evidenced by frequent network commercials for erectile dysfunction drugs and female contraception.

The new Trojan campaign includes four commercials focusing on sexual health statistics compiled by Trojan. The first commercial, viewable on Trojan's Web site before its television premiere, begins with a graphic explaining that 40 percent of people who know they are HIV positive do not divulge that fact to their sexual partners. All of the spots will include the message: "Other than abstinence, there is only one way to protect yourself. Use a condom every time." .......

3. Good ad...
"Other than abstinence, there is only one way to protect yourself. Use a condom every time." .......

It counters the abstinence-only-condoms-don't-work bu$hit that the fundies are spouting, which is dangerous and scientifically WRONG.

25. It's true. My penis exploded after using a condom. Don't trust condoms.
Condoms are Satan's weapon against the American Family. This message brought to you by those who hope to create cheap labor through superstitious fearmongering. :sarcasm:

Condom ads have run on network television since 1996.

October 17, 1996 BOSTON (AP) -- An unwritten agreement forbidding condom ads on television has begun to crumble, with four network affiliates now airing a commercial featuring a skeleton explaining why he refused to use such protection.

WCVB-TV, the ABC affiliate in Boston, this week became the fourth station in the country to agree to show the ads for LifeStyles condoms, though only after midnight. KPRC-TV in Houston, KING-TV in Seattle and KCPM-TV in Chico, Calif., all NBC affiliates, began running the commercials last month. All but Chico are in top 20 markets.
...
The 60-second LifeStyles ad shows a computer animated skeleton obstinately repeating his excuses for never using condoms in his lifetime.

7. They're probably a lot less offensive than feminine hygiene commercials
I just want to gag whenever a yeast infection, feminine odor, or feminine itching commercial pops up. They try to be tasteful, but it just takes you to a place NOBODY really wants to go. At least condom ads are something EVERYONE can relate to and benefit from.

(appaently from Europe) sent to me via e-mail.

Father with son (about five years old) are in the grocery store. Son picks up bag and places it in the store cart. Father puts bag back on the shelf. Kid gives Father a baleful glare as he again places the bag in the cart. Father once again, patiently, replaces the bag on to the shelf.

Kid opens mouth and begins to wail loudly (subtitled) "I WANT THOSE SWEETIES!!! I WANT THOSE SWEETIES!!!

I WANT THOSE SWEETIES"

Kid then grabs the shopping cart and shakes it back and forth, now screaming at the top of his voice.

Kid starts running around the store throwing things off the shelves, out of the vegetable bins and the frozen food section.

Kid throws himself on the floor kicking and pounding his fists, screaming all the while.

Father watches as other customers in the store give disapproving looks as they move out of the little monster's way.

Father wears suffering look as he blows a strand of hair off his face.

Cut to black screen. A product with the colorful lable ZAZOO emerges. A caption comes up under the box of ZAZOO. "USE CONDOMS"

On a related note: the "Teenage Mum" ad presents the challenges of a teenage mum as a Sims game.

15. It is a huge improvement over "Feminine Oder"
and "Itch". Why the hell don't the fundies complain about that shit?
Oh, I know why! Because it is so degrading to woman!

20. Isn't it funny that condom commercials are still considered controversial
after years of Cialis commercials at dinnertime with their porn-film background music?

24. Aids
I remember a few years ago there were Aids commercials warning about having unprotected sex and promoting condom use, but they were public service commercials, not manufacturers condom commercials.

22. You know, I was at the gym last night and wasn't really paying attention.
But I saw the ads and wasn't fazed. To me, it was like, "This should have been on a long time ago." It's so very odd and sick what they will advertise on TV (read: crap you don't need) and what they don't. In Germany, ads like this run all the time because (gasp) the populace aren't babies in need of some out-of-favor long-dead Puritanism.
