Christian groups criticize DeWine's role in compromise

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Two conservative Christian groups took to the air to criticize U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine for his part in a Senate compromise that broke a logjam holding up three of President Bush's judicial appointments.

The Washington-based Family Research Council and Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values ran the ads about 40 times on two Cincinnati-area radio programs Tuesday, said Chuck Donovan, executive vice president of the Family Research Council.

The ads are critical of the compromise that DeWine, a Republican, helped to forge between seven GOP senators and seven Democrats for yes-or-no votes on some of Bush's stalled nominations while protecting the future right of Democrats to use the filibuster to block nominees they feel are out of the mainstream.

"We've got a strong base there, We know the radio stations," said Donovan, whose group warned of "repercussions" against some of the Republicans, including DeWine, in the compromise...
