CONKLIN: What do Al and Rush share?
00:00 am 6/01/05

Al Franken got his Madison report card. And the grades are excellent.

The latest quarterly Arbitron ratings came out late last week for the 12-week-period starting in January. Air America's local affiliate, "The MIC 92.1," posted the biggest overall audience ratings increase.

"Those wondering if it was going to have any legs post-fall elections when we had Bruce Springsteen, Michael Moore and John Kerry in town, got their answer," boasts Mike Ferris, Clear Channel Madison's FM operations manager. "This book proves that it does and it's increasing, not maintaining. This is the story of this book - we've beat the sophomore jinx." (Air America launched locally Sept. 7, 2004.)

Proving Madison is home to a diversity of opinions, Franken's tally put him neck-and-neck with Rush Limbaugh.

Ferris says his office sent the ratings to Franken. "It's your report card, you want to show it to Mom and Dad," he attests. "I'm sure Al is thrilled with that. I'm not even sure Rush cares. Franken's got a soft spot in his heart for Madison."

1. Rush doesn't need ratings. The right-wing will pay his way for him
What we need is to get Limpballs off the government-subsidized Armed Forces Radio and put Air America there in its place.

Al Franken Whips Rush Limbaugh in Arbitron Ratings...

No doubt Air American Radio has been having its troubles as it seeks to establish itself. This has particularly come in the form of money. However Air America Radio has achieved great success in its first Arbitron Ratings... Al Franken has soundly trashed Rush Limbaugh among the most coveted demographics.

In New York during the time when Al Franken's show, "The O'Franken Factor" is broadcast in the same time slot as Rush Limbaugh , Franken beat Rush among 18-54 year olds.

From the Chicago Tribune...

in New York, where Air America still broadcasts over WLIB-1190 AM, the network beat Limbaugh's station, Disney-owned WABC, among both 25-to-54-year-olds and 18-to-34-year-olds during the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. period. In the 25-to-54 demographic, WLIB garnered a 3.4 share to WABC's 3.1; among 18-to-34-year-olds, WLIB won sevenfold with a 2.9 share to WABC's 0.4.

In Chicago, Air America Radio was on only 28 days before a billing dispute knocked it off the air. Still, Franken turned in a very strong showing against Limbaugh. While on during its short time period on WNTD, WNTD went from a 0.1 percent share to a 3 percent share among 25 to 54 year olds. It stands to reason that should Air American find another broadcaster, they can continue their success in this market and continue to pull listeners from WLS-AM which airs Rush Limbaugh's show.

5. Franken renamed the show
about 3 months or so after its debut (I have listened to the show every frigging day since 3/31/04, but I have no life). At the time Al said he had called it the O'Franken Factor simply to piss off O'Reilly and hopefully goad him into suing Al again (for the publicity). When that didn't happen, Al explained on the air that he wanted to rename the show. I thought it was funny that he called his show the O'Franken Factor, but have come to realize that naming his show after O'Reilly would put more attention on O'Reilly than on Al. I can understand why Al changed it.
