Army Guard: Military Portrayal '100 Percent Untrue'

NEWARK, N.J. -- The first Army reservist to be freed after serving time for his role in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal says he is a good person who was under tremendous stress in Iraq.

Javal S. Davis was released from military prison Sunday after serving less than four months for mistreating detainees. In his first interview since being freed, the former Army sergeant said Wednesday that the horrific conditions in and around Abu Ghraib -- open sewage, rotting body parts and constant fear of death from rockets and bombs - would "drive the most docile soldier from `Gomer Pyle' into `Full Metal Jacket."'

He said he regrets the part he played in an episode that generated widespread anti-American sentiment, but said it was blown out of proportion by the media.

"I'm a good person," Davis said in the interview at his lawyer's office. "The way I was portrayed as a soldier at Abu Ghraib is 100 percent untrue. I'm not the bad apple soldier I was portrayed as being by the military."

1. I read the article
and felt a twinge of sympathy for him. Until I got to the crap where he puts the blame on the media, for not covering it up.

2. That bothered me also
It wasn't trumped up by the media, it was exposed. I got the impression he was feeling sorry for himself and not the people who were being tortured.

It was still an enlightening read.

3. Another tragedy.
He just had a mirror held up to him. Not sure if he is ready to take responsibility.

9. Whatever there, bud
You go ahead and tell yourself whatever it is you have to tell yourself in order to sleep at night...but don't blame the media for what YOUR actions caused.

10. "100% untrue" would mean he didn't do it. In fact he did do it. In fact
other soldiers did not do it, and they reported the torturers.

So in fact NOT all soldiers would turn into "Full Metal Jacket".

4 months for torture and abuse.

3 months for murder.

No wonder the world doesn't want our "American justice".

11. Well said, Lynn.
No interest here in the crocodile tears of torturers.
