Fears over CIA 'university spies'

A CIA scheme to sponsor trainee spies secretly through US university courses has caused anger among UK academics.

The Pat Roberts Intelligence Scholars Program pays anthropology students, whose names are not disclosed, up to $50,000 (£27,500) a year.

They are expected to use the techniques of "fieldwork" to gather political and cultural details on other countries.

Undergraduates taking part in the scholarship programme must not reveal their funding source and are expected to attend military intelligence summer camps.

Several hotels in London were famous for allowing US Citizens to come in and pay with dollars as a perk, because the rates were nearly the same. This is of course during the fiscal disaster that was Thatcher politics.

10. Thank you..I was refering to long before the Euro..but I had no idea the

Pound took off like that also...I do recall..when my sister was a part of the Civilian Navy in the 80's and early 90's and thought the Pound was almost the same as the dollar..and I recall that she could spend 100,000 lire in one night...WOW! Now the Euro is 1.24 to 1.5 the value of the dollar..but at least you do not have to pocket a couple million lire to visit Italy..though they want to bring it back.
