EU, US sing different tune on Iran's participation in Iraqi conference

Asked whether Tehran would be invited to a June 22 meeting on Iraqi reconstruction in Brussels, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice launched into a litany of criticism of Iran.

She accused the Islamic Republic of supporting militants trying to derail Middle East peace talks, of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, of destabilizing Iraq and denying true democracy to the Iranian people.

"And we have our differences with Iran. We believe very strongly that Iran is a state that is out of step with what is going on in the region," the chief US diplomat said.

But Jean Asselborn, foreign minister of current EU president Luxembourg, was more succinct in interjecting his views on Iran's attendance at the gathering to be co-sponsored by the United States and EU.

"Luxembourg has the presidency. Luxembourg has relations with Iran. Iran is invited," Asselborn said.

Rice quickly recovered and added, that "it's not a problem from our point of view that they are invited to this conference."

...condiliar has no clue when to shut up.
