Bush Poised to Nominate Dozens For Judgeships, GOP Insiders Say

By Peter Baker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, June 3, 2005; Page A21

The White House is preparing to send a raft of new judicial nominations to the Senate in the next few weeks, according to Republican strategists inside and outside the administration -- a move that could challenge the durability of last week's bipartisan filibuster deal and reignite the political warfare it was intended to halt.

The Bush administration has been vetting candidates for 30 more federal district and appeals court vacancies that have been left open for months while the Senate battled over previous nominations stalled by Democrats. Now that Democrats have agreed not to filibuster any new candidates except in "extraordinary circumstances," Republicans are eager to test the proposition.

"Republicans feel this is a good moment to move forward with judicial nominations," said Sean Rushton, executive director of the Committee for Justice, a group formed by C. Boyden Gray, who was White House counsel under President Bush's father, to support the current president's judicial appointments. "It's time to move on and also to get past the Clinton period" when Democrats salted the federal judiciary with more liberal appointments.

Rushton said he expects "a large swath" of nominations in the next few weeks unless Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist or another Supreme Court justice decides to step down at the end of the term later this month, an event that would throw current plans out the window. Administration and congressional officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made, said they, too, expect a flurry of lower-court nominations within weeks. "There's about 20 waiting in the wings," a Senate Republican official said.

4. Yeah, well..I was thinking
in terms along those lines.

I'll just bet he's smacking his yurtle the turtle lips at the thought of making the judiciary all his too.

The Quisling Dems will just 'compromise' again.

6. Democrats gave in to the Republicans and they will punish us
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 10:41 PM by Democat
We could have taken a stand and made points with the American people as part of a long term strategy to take back America.

Instead we kiss Republicans ass and they laugh and then kick us even harder.

When will Democrats take a stand on something and actually stand, rather than cave in at the last minute?

8. Time to shut the Senate down
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 10:52 PM by warrens
We really only need one Senator to shut things down. They can't get a quorum without us. Shut it fucking down. Watch them come crawling back. Shiteaters that they are. (Sorry to honest shiteaters. Man is that double sarcasm)

14. Start sending faxes to Kennedy
or others who have the balls to stand up and shut it down fast because they're going to start shoving sh*t down the D's throats faster than they can swallow, and don't forget, the repugs work during the night and slip things in and the D's don't read any of it.

9. The Band of Fourteen
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 11:17 PM by necso
(or whatever number) had better attend to their shield-wall. (While I don't approve of their tactics, it would be too low of a farce for me to enjoy, seeing them scatter like quail at the first (substantial) neocon counterattack.)

The "deal" (substitute "screwing" if you wish) has left non-compromise Dems with like jakeshat power. Thirty-eight votes is good for nothing. And we can't take more drastic action here (if this would be wise in any event), since then we would be portrayed as pissing on this much ballyhooed "compromise".

Counterattacks were to be expected. This is just one of who-knows-how-many attacks to come.

Time will see how it plays out.

Oh, and the neocons are pretty much free to piss on the "deal" (as they are doing), while we would be savaged for doing the counterpart. Funny how that works.

...

And I would bet that this "mix" of nominees is a rather lethal cocktail.

Bottoms up!

10. Wasn't this predictable?
I loathe Bush's unwillingness to compromise. He must really enjoy seeing the U.S.Senate and the country so divided. For him it is win at any cost. What a despicable "small man" he actually is. We must all have been, subjected to theft, manipulation, lies or a curse to have ended up with such a man as this as President of our great nation.

21. Straight shooter...I am with you. I absolutely hate that man.
As I've said before...I never knew I was capable of such hatred towards a fellow human being.

Every time shrub opens his mouth, every time he comes up with an idea, every time he nominates someone -- the citizens of this country get fucked.

Shrubby doesn't give a shit about the American people -- all he cares about is winning and getting what he wants. He is a true narcissist.

13. Bush's radical ideology will marginalize his nominees
even if they become judges. They'll get the same disdain that meets with Clarence Thomas. Yeah, they are in there, but not because of their abilities.

15. Lifetime appointment or not, can these judges be ousted later?
If their rulings are suspect, and there are valid complaints, why couldn;t THEY be impeached? I seem to remeber that Alcee Hastings was a sitting judge, when he was recalled by the repubes.. Tit for tat!

16. Gee...and what Jon Stewart said was right on the mark
"Democrats agreed to allow three of the judges to pass.......and then the Republicans will just push the others through later."

I wish Dems would start growing a collective spine and saying to hell what Repugs think! MOST Americans are against the so-called 'nuclear option' in the first place, and so for the Repugs to "push the button" would be suicide come 2006.

17. Does anyone remember that decomissioning idea that the fundies had?
Is it a viable strategy for dealing with a seriously fucked up judiciary? Couldn't we just fill up a bag with their own dogshit idea and light it on fire on their doorstep when we get the country back?

No reason why Bush shouldn't send up 21 of the the most evil rotten judges he can find....

Harry Reid has yet to deny Bush anything he's asked for- hard to believe, but man makes Daschle look good!

Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 04:41 PM by Democat
And when he loses we lose.

I don't think he's worse than Daschle, but he's not the bold and capable leader we need right now. I'm not sure that person exists at any high level of the Democratic Party.

It's going to take years to fix this leadership problem.
