Brazilian lawmakers have approved a project authorizing the government to break patents on drugs for treating AIDS, O Globo reported Thursday.

For years, Brazil's Ministry of Health has been fighting with pharmaceutical companies for the right to purchase for a fraction of the cost AIDS drugs for Brazil's federal AIDS treatment program.

1. Brazil use to get generic AIDS drugs from India, but not any more
India was forced by the IMF to stop producing generic AIDS drugs. Hopefully Brazil produces enough of these drugs for all of SA because the other SA countries are hurting by the stoppage of Indian generic drugs.

3. More like the drug companies were salivating over the profits
it could make if they were able to take over the Indian, SA and African AIDS drug markets. India supplied the world with generic AIDS drugs and the drug companies were not happy.

Right now in India, there are still protests in the streets for the loss of their jobs and loss of the drugs. But that is not important, GD Searle is grinning.

8. I remember hearing something about this
Didn't the Indian legislature also cave to foreign demands over patents?

I think all this had to do with entry into the WTO.

Am I mistaken?
