The leader of a U.S.-based anti-Cambodian government group arrested on charges of plotting to overthrow the Cambodian government has raised more than $6,500 for Republican causes, GOP officials said.
Yasith Chhun, 48, of Long Beach, was arrested Wednesday on federal conspiracy charges accusing him of plotting an attack on the Cambodian capital 4 1/2 years ago that killed six rebels and a civilian bystander and wounded several police officers.
Chhun, the president of the Cambodian Freedom Fighters, was denied bail Thursday in his first court appearance in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. His next court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
Prior to his arrest, the accountant had raised $6,550 for the National Republican Congressional Committee and was invited to sit on the group's Business Advisory Council, which has tens of thousands of members nationwide, said Carl Forti, a spokesman for the committee.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of Huntington Beach said he remained a supporter of Chhun and his allies because of their efforts to topple a communist regime led by Prime Minister Hun Sen.
