DENVER - Three soldiers have been ordered to stand trial at Fort Carson on murder charges in the suffocation of an Iraqi general, who died during an interrogation 1 1/2 years ago.

Chief Warrant Officers Lewis Welshofer and Jeff L. Williams and Spc. Jerry Loper, all of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, also face charges of assault and dereliction of duty during combat operations, Army spokeswoman Kim Tisor said Thursday.

Prosecutors claim the soldiers put Maj. Gen. Abed Mowhoush headfirst into a sleeping bag, tied him up with an electrical cord and threw him to the ground. The Army accuses the soldiers of sitting and standing on Mowhoush's chest.

Previously secret court testimony indicates the Iraqi general's body was badly bruised and he may have been severely beaten two days before he suffocated on Nov. 26, 2003.

1. Let's save time & money here; 3 months jail time each, suspended pay
for the 3 mths, and end of story.

2. Well, I'm sure the Army will get to the bottom of this!
Yuparoonie, the military will thoroughly investigate its own people, fairly and dispassionately evaluate all of the evidence, and arrive at a fair and just verdict.

Clearly, Mr. Mowhoush was about to lunge at the three men from his unassailable position trussed up in the sleeping bag, or he made a threatening move, or Welshofer, Williams and Loper just got tired of knocking him around. Anyway, he needed dying, and the Army merely accommodated him.

Not guilty!

3. Wait and See
I wouldn't want to be one of these soldiers. If the powers that be find it politically expedient, these people will be thrown to the wolves. Again it's the working stiffs paying the price. Not to say that those doing the dirty work shouldn't be punished, but those at the top should pay as well.

4. What Iraqi?
What death?

Oh, him?

He was already dead.

I mean, he was making threatening gestures.

No, I mean, he tried to kill us.

See, what really happened was that he attacked us with sharp knives and a nuclear device and brass knuckles and then he called us names and we felt threatened so we killed him.

Not guilty.

5. Sounds like a very painful and scary death ....
I wonder how some of these guys justify this behaviour to themselves. I wouldn't do this to someone even if I was 'ordered' to

6. Six months probation each! What do I win for seeing the future?
Maybe they'll be on double-secret probation.
