Province loses Devils Lake court battle

WINNIPEG – North Dakota's highest court has ruled the controversial Devils Lake diversion project can go ahead.
The unanimous ruling has cleared the way for the Devils Lake diversion to begin operating as soon as it is complete, expected as early as next month. The project will ease flooding around Devils Lake by diverting water into the Sheyenne River, which joins the Red River near Fargo and flows north to Lake Winnipeg.
"If this doesn't go to the IJC, there are going to be states and provinces doing whatever they want on water projects on a unilateral basis because there will be no respect for an international treaty," said Doer. "This is bigger than North Dakota - Manitoba."
