Iranian video highlights nuclear ambitions

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran is so determined to arouse national pride in its nuclear efforts it has released a surprisingly detailed video that NBC News was able to purchase. It shows, complete with music and a dramatic narration, a very sophisticated operation — from uranium mining to the controversial big plant in Natanz, south of Tehran.

"This video clearly gives the impression that Iran sees its nuclear program as a national treasure, that it's going to be very resistant to give up," says David Albright, the president of the Institute for Science and International Security. "It's not. It's a little bit like asking Britain to give up the crown jewels."

It is this Iranian determination to be part of the nuclear club that has the West so concerned. Uranium can be enriched for a weapons program, and Great Britain, France and Germany met last week in Geneva with Iranian officials in an effort to control Iran's efforts — so they don't lead to nuclear weapons.

1. When I saw the headline I had a perverse thought....
Edited on Sat Jun-04-05 01:14 AM by expatriot
I thought of an Iranian mullah lying on his side in bed smiling into a shaky camcorder and the person filming off camera asks him: "What really turns you on? What does it for you? What makes you get all hot?"

"Well..." the mullah giggles, looks off into nothingness for a while, then all of sudden the giggle disappears and in a sudden jerk of the head the mullah peers into the camera with piercing eyes. "Nuclear fucking weapons with uh... missile technology from North Korea... no from RUSSIA... yeah... Russian ICBM's... damn that makes me so hot! ooh... baby I dream of blowing things up!"

5. Re: setting up for the summer reruns
Isn't this fantasy of yours meant to dehumanize 'creatively' enough to make a possible attack against the Iranians seem all the more palatable? Couldn't you just leave it to the warmongers-in-charge to deminish that country's culture as part of their rigged and well-oiled preperation for an assault?

It seems like a nasty way to stir up hateful images (with a punchline).

No, you say, just kidding around?

Why not just say you think the Iranians are nuts and will stop at nothing to possess nukes (like their neighbors in Israel do - but never acknowledge)? Joking about the erotic fantasies of a clergyman involving nuclear weapons implants notions of evil, threatening danger and would seem to make light of the real source of instability - war by invasion, etc. OK, it IS free speech.

Suddenly appears a barrage of warring sentiment cloaked in "humanism" and humor, as if it's going to kick-start some anti-Iranian sentiment. The same thing preceded the invasion of Iraq, as if it might soften the blow on the left. Swell.

Try replacing 'mullah' with 'priest' or 'rabbi' and sart the joke over, then put it in the context of a pending threat to bomb the living daylights out of the Vatican or some Sinagogue. See how that goes over.

How much abuse do Muslims need to take? They are a contrived enemy for Christ's sake! Imagine how they might see us if we weren't the ones threatening THEM!

Of course they tout their technical achievements - it's not as if we don't.

3. The galleries at Natanz were empty on March 13th. The Israelis had claimed
they contained 50,000 Pakistani design centrifuges. That set the timetable for bunker-busting back at least a few months.

No doubt, they were dispersed prior to the admission of the camera crews (an image the US audience never saw). Good luck finding them, Ariel.

4. They can get away with this because Bush has weakened the US.
The US is physically incapable of doing anything about that nuke program, so they can thumb their noses at him.
