Basra Airport reopens with lamb slaughter
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/06/04/ubasra.xml&sSheet=/portal/2005/06/04/ixportaltop.html

Basra International Airport in Iraq has welcomed its first fare-paying passengers since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

The arrival of the first plane, an Iraqi Airways Boeing 727 from the capital Baghdad, was marked by the slaughter of a sacrificial lamb in front of the aircraft.

The city is the headquarters of the British forces in the country.

Group Captain Ian Wood, the air station commander, said that the re-opening of the airport to commercial flights was a "significant step towards the reconstruction and independence of the region".

He added: "The British have been privileged to help in the training of Iraqi firefighters and air traffic controllers in order to make this possible".

1. Bringing freedom and lamb sacrifices to the opressed Iraqis-
makes ya proud, don't it? Plus, now they can fly to other cities and not have to get blown up only at home.

2. Woohoo! Britain got the cushy job!
Blair probably fooled Shrubbie with the ol' "yes-no-yes-no-no-yes" trick.

3. This seems strangely appropriate.
Slaughtering a lamb to celebrate the reopening of the Basra airport seems strangely appropriate, and prophetic. I certainly wouldn't want to be a lamb on any aircraft flying within or heading for Iraq right about now. Of course, this is from The Telegraph, so it could be mostly made up.

"The flight is expected to mark the beginning of regular flights linking Basra, Baghdad and the northern city of Arbil.

Scheduled flights to Basra are planned to continue around three times a week, with more routes to neighbouring countries planned for later in the year."

10. They do this a lot in the middle east

"Dah-hah" or "lamb sacrifice" is literally what it means. A local butcher comes to the home bearing a lamb and either the butcher himself, or the mother of the family cuts the throat on the front step. The doomed beast must expire quickly and painlessly - with one cut to the throat only. Any more is extremely haram, shameful and wrong - a sin, even, and negates the good that would otherwise result from this ritual. Blood is smeared on the front step and the door and sometimes family members put bloody handprints on the door and the surrounding area for good luck. In the US, this might raise a few eyebrows, but in the Middle East, it's an excuse for a party!

12. "Lamb of God who Taketh Away the Sins of the World,

Take Bush and Cronies and their Pathetically Failed Policies with you."

- The Supplicants inplored of their Diety

(I must add that in my experience and in my view Blood and Flesh Sacrifices, ultimately, connect only with Wrathful Discarnates, and thus are both anachronistic and unwholesome in our epoch).
