Mandelson Wants to Fast Track GM (Foods and Crops)
Mandelson wants to fast-track GM
By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor

05 June 2005

Peter Mandelson is pressing for new GM foods and crops to be eaten and planted across Europe, even though governments cannot agree on whether to introduce them, top officials from the European Commission have told The Independent on Sunday.

They say that the controversial trade commissioner's department wants to speed up their use, despite widespread public opposition, and is insisting on their being imposed by the Commission on unwilling governments.

The Commission lifted a six-year moratorium on approving new modified foods and crops last year, and biotech firms have been queuing up to have their products officially cleared for use across the Continent.

Two types of GM maize have already been passed for human and livestock consumption over the past year, and more than 30 GM versions of maize, rice, potatoes, sugar beet, soya beans and other foods and crops are awaiting approval.

12. Look at the what the IMF and World Bank
Have been doing in developing countries -- in many cases, they've been damming rivers and preventing free access to water sources, and then forcing impoverished villagers to pay for access to water.

And don't discount the role of water rights in the Middle East conflicts. There's a well-regarded book that covers in detail that issue.

13. they won't be satisfied until they control all the basic mechanisms
of survival -- food, water, shelter... they'd control and sell air if they could, and no doubt, they are working at it.

4. No one wants this shit

As evidenced by the fight to prevent the labelling of GM food as such.

Who walks into a shop and says "I want some GM food please"

Absolutely no-one.

The inserted genes are so unwanted by the host plants that they need genetic parasites such as cancer-causing viruses ( CaMV ) called "promoters" to force the plant to accept the foreign gene.

5. Well, at LEAST you know when you buy something labeled "organic"
you don't have to worry about GM ingredients. A small victory for Organic labeling, but an important one.

10. The CaMV
is used as the main viral promoter in 95% of the gene splicing arrangements. Google Mae Wan Ho and CaMV or just google cauliflower mosaic virus to learn more.

11. Mandelson is a pimp for corporate interests
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 09:28 AM by fedsron2us
He is pretty much loathed both inside and outside the Labour Party within the UK. Indeed, most Blairites, apart from King Tony himself, can not stand him. When you have people like him as European commissioner you understand why enthusiasm for European integration is waning in some EU member states.
