{ Abundant News (boxun.com) reports that 8 of its correspondents on the recent Bird Flu outbreak in Qinghai, China have been arrested. Reports have been surfacing on boxun.com about Bird Flu since May 23. One report indicated that 121 people had been infected with the virus, and that 79 died. Subsequent reports gave statistics about dead animals in the area, and photographs of the popular tourist area, Niao Island, covered with dead and dying birds. The government officials in the area have denied outright any claim that humans had been infected, and said that no human infections whatsoever have been reported. 3 Million doses of vaccine were rushed to the area's poultry farms, and a large vaccination campaign is underway. Given these arrests, we can now assume that all information about the epidemic will come from government officials from now on. }

7. News Blackout
The news has been blacked out for awhile. No third parties on the ground (WHO sends e-mails and Nature reporter can't get anyone to talk).

3. What is the accuracy of your links?
The world health organization has not reported any such incidences

After the coverup during the SARS outbreak, I would be very surprised if they were not working with international officials

4. The accuracy...
Is indeed suspect, but China hasn't moved to deny it yet. I'll keep watching and post anything china says in response. The coincidence of this stuff with the tienanmen square protests is suspect, but there can be no denying that there is an outbreak going on. Whether or not humans are involved is up for debate. China is certainly not keeping its citizens informed. The MSM is not covering this at all, either.

5. The reason I am somewhat skeptical at this time
is when the actual dead birds were identified about 6 to 8 weeks ago, they not only reported it, but call in the WHO

We will see in the course of time how it evolves

6. Third Photo of Dead Birds
The third photo of dead birds is now available (added when reporters were arrested)

http://news.google.com/news?q=bird%20flu%20photos&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wn

China initially reported 178 bar headed geese died and said no bird flu was involved. Then the admitted H5N1 was found in their report on 519 dead birds (5 species). The it was raised to 1000. Arrested reported listed 8000 dead birds and backed up report with pictures.

11. Stability of H5N1
Last fall WHO warned that the H5N1 that killed people could grow to high titers in asymptomatic ducks and was unusually stable.
