Police arrest 24 in protest against I-69 at Indiana capital
June 5, 2005, 1:44 PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A protest against the proposed extension of Interstate 69 that resulted in 24 arrests was only the first of a series of demonstrations promised by a group opposed to globalization.

The 24 people arrested Saturday at the Statehouse protest came from at least six states -- Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Pennsylvania -- and range in age from 18 to 30. Each was charged with disorderly conduct. <snip>

A group calling itself Roadblock Earth First organized the protest as the first of several planned for the this summer, said Marie Mason of Detroit and formerly of Bloomington, who said she was a member of the group.

"This has got everybody sideswiped," Mason said. "It was intended as a legal protest to make it known to people at the state capitol that folks were still organizing and protesting against the construction of the highway." <snip>

2. Because of 69?
Well there was a spoof that people were upset with the use of 69 for a highway.

4. Thats pretty funny!
<snip> Some protesters had spray-painted anti-I-69 graffiti on the Statehouse. <snip>

I would love to know what "anti I-69 graffiti" is.

9. I-69 will cause a lot of environmental damage...
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 06:18 PM by IndianaGreen
they are proposing to extend I-69 by building the highway through some of the most scenic areas in Indiana.

"From the outset, the I-69 project has been marked by fiscal irresponsibility, ignorance of diminishing returns, and misallocation of scarce government investment opportunities," said Greg Travis, executive director of the Association of Monroe County Taxpayers. "The smell of special interests grubbing down at the public pork buffet is almost overwhelming and Hoosier taxpayers have had enough."

10. it's a road that is completely un-needed
They (INDOT) have never been able to demonstrate need. They simply want it. It's an utter waste of money, destructive, and largely unwanted by those not standing to make a profit from it.
