Courts-martial not likely in Quran incidents, official says
Joint chiefs of staff chairman says they're serious but probably don't warrant trial

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The United States military is unlikely to hold court-martial proceedings in three cases of deliberate mishandling of the Quran at Guantanamo Bay prison, a top military official said on Monday.

Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters during a visit to Malaysia that only two or three complaints of mishandling of the Muslim holy book turned out to have involved actions done on purpose.

“This is serious, but it’s clearly not — probably — going to result in court-martial activity,” Myers said. “But it depends on why they did it — what the motivation was,” he told reporters in response to a question.

....

The U.S. military released details last week about five cases in which the Quran was kicked, stepped on, soaked in water, and in one instance, splashed with a guard’s urine falling through an air vent.

1. No, it doesn't depend on what their motivation was. If you steal something
for a good reason, it's still theft. If you piss on a detainee's Quran, you should be prosecuted.

...if they are willing to admit this, you know the part that they aren't admitting to is much worse.

3. The "Investigations?" they were conducted by the GTMO Commander!
The guy in charge of GTMO did the investigation of mistreatment at GTMO! I guess that's what passes for a "Thorough" investigation" for *.

I heard that yesterday, Harry Shearer pointed that out on his radio Program "LeShow."

4. No court martial, then it must be a medal.
Wonder if they are working on medal for flushing the Koran?
