NEW YORK - Doers and doings in business, entertainment and technology:

Asda, the British supermarket chain owned by Wal-Mart Stores (nyse: WMT - news - people ), signed up a tough new spokeswoman late last year: Sharon Osborne, the formidable plum-haired star of Viacom's (nyse: VIAb - news - people ) MTV reality show. Now it's got a tough new market to match. Today, ASDA said it has bought 12 stores in Northern Ireland from its rival Morrison Supermarkets for $133 million. Asda plans to spend another $55 million refurbishing the outlets and will recruit 250 employees by the end of the year to man the new stores. Morrison picked up the stores as part of its $5.5 billion acquisition of Britain's Safeway chain last year, but is concentrating its efforts on its mainland British network. "Opening our first ever stores in Northern Ireland is a very exciting prospect for us and great news for local shoppers," Asda Chief Executive Andrew Bond told the Associated Press. Asda expects the transaction to be sewn up by September, subject to approval from the U.K. Office of Fair Trading.
