Nepal bus blast kills dozens

Randeep Ramesh, South Asia correspondent
Tuesday June 7, 2005
The Guardian

Almost 40 people were killed and dozens of people injured in south-western Nepal when a landmine exploded under a crowded commuter bus in one of the most deadly attacks on civilians since the Maoist rebellion erupted in 1996.

The blast occurred in the district of Chitwan, 110 miles south of Kathmandu, in the early hours yesterday. Army officers blamed the rebels for the bombing, saying the explosion had been caused by a homemade bomb. Maoists as a rule try to avoid targeting civilians.

"The bus ran over a landmine planted by the terrorists," an army officer told Reuters, referring to the Maoists. The King of Nepal's regime, which seized power in a bloodless coup in February, labels the rebels as terrorists. "The place is littered with blood, limbs are scattered around the site. We have got 38 bodies so far. Many women and children have been killed."

Passengers said they had been taken by surprise. "There was a small bang and then our bus was thrown in the air. The bus was ripped into pieces and many people were killed," said Khum Bahadur Gurung, 62, who spoke to the Associated Press from his hospital bed.

1. No need for you to apologize, but...
you'd think that The Guardian wouldn't put that stupid Pogo game in the middle of this particular story. Somehow, the animation and the story are an unfortunate match.

2. Sorry, I don't ever see the ads, my ad blocker gets rid of them.
All I ever see is two gray lines and the words "Article continues" above them.

Here's the link, I've used it for years, works great on most normal ads.

3. Thanks!
I already use Firefox and that deletes a lot. This one was embedded in the article. I'm glad I mentioned it as I didn't know there is more I can do. You're a peach!

4. No problem, just so you don't think I gave you a bum steer...
...I also use FireFox, and have added "Spy Sweeper" too. It blocks Spyware before it gets on your computer, some Spyware is actually Ad-ware, which looks just like Pop-up ads, some can even pop up when you're off-line.

They have a free trial too, you'd be surprised how much Spyware is probably already on your computer.

P.S. I Love your Avatar, for some reason, I hear Betty Boops voice when ever I see it.

5. I'll dl'd the trial, then
i also use some other softwares like spybot. but i hear it can sometimes fall down on the job.

the only time i got into real trouble was when i downloaded software by mistake. i thought it was a translation software and boy did it give me adgarra. so, i went to geeks-to-go and got some terrific help. they helped me get rid of some other stuff as well as adaware and my computer has been running a lot faster. we also use a router and zone alarm is set to ask me before anything so much as tries to fart at my machine. :)

my avatar is actually a face from an old 30s newspaper comic strip. i forget who she is but betty will do! boop-oop-e-doop. uh-oh, i thinks i gotta ear worm!

6. Oops, sorry, we killed thirty innocent people riding a bus
Ah, well, progress has its price. But don't worry, the blast may have shredded a bunch of civilians, but our Maoist ideals are still intact.

/sarcasm off

Peace.

Nepal's Maoist rebels on June 7 apologized for a blast that killed 38 people in the worst attack on civilians since their revolt began in 1996, saying they had been aiming for a passing army convoy instead. 'It was a serious mistake that a land mine placed by a contingent of our people's liberation army targeted at the royal army exploded causing loss to the public,' rebel chief Prachanda, who uses only one name, said in a statement. The hands of a woman and child are seen, both victims, after a landmine exploded under a packed commuter bus in southern Nepal on June 6 2005, killing 38 passengers and wounding 72.
